I've heard that the duraspark dizzy is pretty much the best dizzy you can buy for a FE. Right now I've got points and I'd like to go to electronic. Now I hear that the Duraspark came on a couple mid seventies 390s and that you could pick one up fairly cheep from the parts store. About how much is considered cheep? I've seen those MSDs and they're not exactly in my price range. Are Duraspark dizzies really that good? I'm new to all this so if this is a question that seems to be common knowledge I'm sure it won't be the last. Thanks
The distributors themselves are good, but the ignition module required to operate them are not very dependable. Expect to have strange intermitent running & starting problems. I would recomend a new spare module on hand to help with problem diagnoses.
Look into the Mallory Unilite. No external module needed and therefore no wires running everywhere under the hood. I have had one in my 410 now for about 50,000 miles without a problem. Replaced cap & roter not long ago for preventative maintaience.
BTW, have you heard of the Petronix conversion for your stock dist.? There are a few people in the '67-'72 & '73-'79 forums using them with good results. Probably the least expensive, cleanest, and easiest way to go electronic.
I like the Pertronix module very much. I'm running it in a '74 360 with the pertronix coil. For me the cost made it the best choice, as my distributor is practically new (heck, the whole engine is practically new with only 29,xxx original miles). The ignitor and coil have been in place for a little over 1000 miles and it seems to work well. I have the plugs gapped to.045 and it starts perfectly every time.
