Some diesel locomotives have those. A mechanical engineers terrible idea. If it is used alone and doesn’t have enough air to start the engine you’re stranded. On the other hand if that’s all you have… you don’t have to work that day.

I that Mack, International, and Ford had semis with air starters, was just curious to putting one on a pickup as they tend to spin motor faster,
not to mention they sound cool.
Do you already have a good sized air compressor running off the engine and a couple air tanks?
More weight, more complexity, and if you have an air leak what will you do? No one will be able to jump start your truck, so it will most likely be a tow to home or the shop.
I've only operated one engine with an air starter. It was an aircraft ground support equipment chiller cart to blow cold air through the fuselage of aircraft while there on the ground.
I can't remember any advantage to them except there's no battery that goes bad every 5 years. Instead, you have to hydrostatic check your air tank every 5 years.... And I had to pump up the tank every time I wanted to use it because it would leak down overnight.
The factory starter and batteries is a really reliable setup.

park on hills and use a manual transmission if you’re are really worried about starters
just make sure it’s enough of a hill so you don’t just compression hold(is that a concern on a diesel?)
i have run many many air start trucks. and i do not miss them.
are they fun to scare the crap out of people? YUP.
are they fun to have with air leaks that ALL TRUCKS have??? HELL NO!!
