Starter trouble.

I installed a power master starter today. Bought from summit. It came with no instructions whatsoever but it did come with a shim. I never used a shim in all of the stock starters I have installed so I left it out.

when I went to start it while it’s cranking it sounds smooth. Now when the engine kicks and starts to run without assistance if the motor, it sounds like the motor is not disengaging fast enough.

The Solenoid is new and wired with the one on the starter. The only thing I noticed is that the ignition key is slightly sticky. Which posts in the solenoid do I touch to get it to turn over? (Never done this I apologize for the ignorance here)

I do not understand how the provided shim will help with the gear much as move it back away from the ring gear. Thanks!

You can bridge the two big wires, bat to starter, or bat to the small one closest to it. The first bypasses the solenoid, the second energizes the solenoid. You will need the key on to make it run either way. If you just want to spin the motor, leave the key off or out.
If the ignition switch is sticking it may be the problem.
I have never seen a shim on a Ford starter.

If I remember correctly, the other small wire on the solenoid sends full battery voltage to the coil while cranking.

@dubya TF are you still throwing money at the Iron-Headed 390 FE ?

I had a starter loose a tooth, and didn't know it.
If the engine didn't fire up instantly, and required cranking, the engine would stop suddenly, and kick back. Hmm
That missing tooth caused me more grief, until one day I pulled the spark plugs and turned over the engine to do a compression test.
The engine turned over to the missing tooth, and kicked back. Aha !!! _ _ bushswaggled again with starter issues, and thought I had timing issues.
You might lube your starter switch and check it with a trouble light. Also maybe try your shim provided. ?

Some would call us insane but yes Sir, still at it. Power, tilt steering is the latest project.

Back on track with the OP- I too have a Power Master starter and I think another important piece is to have really good grounds for the three main components of your truck. Body to frame and frame to engine and engine to body. All my other harnesses are the repop versions from either LMC or DC and I haven't had any issues with my underdash harness ....yet. I agree with Dan about the shim- toss that joker into your spare parts bin.

I figured it out. I had done the jumper wire method on the starter. Got rid of that and ran it using the relay on the starter itself using the fender mounted solenoid to actuate the one on the starter.

it works great now, and no issues!!

I too got the repop harnesses for under the hood, and I made my own for the one for the taillights. My under dash harness is in excellent condition.

now that I have the engine bay wiring fresh and organized (finally) I need to go through and organize the under dash harness and add in the extras I have added.
