So the starter in my truck was doing fine until today, I went to start it up and was met with a loud grinding noise. I immediately tried to shut the truck off but it didn't stop even with the key out. I did get it to stop by turning the key back to the starting position. Well after that my truck won't start, it just clicks. Did my starter just completely destroy itself or could i just get a new gear for it? I have lots of older ford trucks sitting around (older than mine) would a starter out of one of those work?
If the truck wouldn't shut off with the key it sounds like the problem may be in the ignition switch. Some troubleshooting is definitely in order. This is interesting, kindly keep us updated.

Ya i was thinking that aswell because somthing has to have caused it to keep cranking. I tested the starter solenoid after and it caused the wires from it to the battery to smoke. I had recently looked at the starter because it was making a whining sound and one of the teeth was a bit worn. Shouldn't the engine still crank even if i busted some teeth on the starter?
Well if the engine was running, shutting the ignition switch off should have stopped the engine. Now if the the starter had kept turning the engine, without the engine running, I would say the fender mounted solenoid(relay) was bad(sticking).
If you busted some teeth on the starter drive gear, the starter would still atleast make a whirring sound if everything else was operational.

Well when it kept cranking the starter it never started because i tried to turn it off once i heard the grinding. Then i started it and turned it off after i couldnt get it to stop cranking. Now it just clicks though. Guess ill have to pull the starter out and take a look after school tomorrow.
I don't know what to say except to repeat some troubleshooting is in order. I'm assuming you have a 1996. There may be a slip on wire on the fender mounted solenoid(relay) that comes from the ignition switch, that sends the signal to the starter to crank it. If so and after you get it cranking again, it continues to crank after you shut the ignition switch off, slip that wire off and if it continues to crank the fender mounted solenoid is bad.
Ok best I can tell the solonoid in the starter stuck on, that starter is no good anymore. When it turns it make a aweful grinding noise, it was already pretty worn out when I got the truck. I put a new starter in and now its good to go.
1995 F250 5.8L. Almost home and heard a loud grinding noise, Pulled into the driveway shut the truck off but the starter kept grinding. Disconnected the battery to stop it. Smelled smoke from down by the starter. Solenoid was cool to the touch. Hooked the battery back up with the key off and the starter spun without hearing a click from the solenoid.. Removed starter and noticed the outer edges of the gear that engages the flywheel worn off. Hooked the battery back up and turned the ignition switch to start. Heard the solenoid click like normal. Any advice you can give me? Thanks.
