I'm no rocket scientist here but if the auto hubs are such junk why not fix it Ford..... I've owned a few jeeps, all with auto locking 4x4, not once did I have issues and I beat on them harder than most would.
You've not had to manually lock a hub in a Jeep for 25+ years at least....
Yes but at first they tried the center axle disconnect which used a vaccum operated collar and a two piece passenger side axle shaft. That system was problematic so in the 90s they just went to a live front axle that turns all the time which is no different than driving around with your hubs locked all the time. They never used auto locking hubs.

Cool thanks for the lesson, didn't realize that. So is the F150 the same way then? I never had to lock hubs in my 12 F150 but that's been the only 4x4 Ford I've owned prior to my 250.

The F150 has vaccum hubs but they work the opposite of how the Superduty hubs do. They lock when vacuum is taken away and unlock when vacuum is applied, so if the vacuum system fails you still have 4x4.

And SD trucks aren't like this because..... ? Is there a reason why or is this just a reason for Ford to keep the manual locking hub option?
