94 4.0 Auto hub 4wd Ranger here. Truck slips in and out of 4wd. Accompanying clunking noise front front of truck along with another noise similar to when you put a baseball card in the spokes of your bike.
The 4wd light always stays lit and throwing it into low range doesnt help engage 4wd when it slips out.
I took one of the front wheels off during the summer and had the center cap some off with it. I put the cap back on ny turning it till it meshed in flush. Could it be I threw something off when I did that or is there a more serious problem going on.
I imagine my problem relates to the front hubs. Thanks in advance.
i had the same type problem so i replaced my autolock hubs with warn manuel lock hubs from advance(1991 ford ranger 4.0 liter). it came with a conversion kit which you will need . there about 180 bucks but well worth it . new autolocking hubs are about 300 bucks. i got so fed up with those auto locking hubs not wanting to engage and then when you wanted to disengage them they wouldnt come out.do your self a favor and get rid of them.
locknut, do you know what the $300 gets you for the autolocks? New motor? Mine seems to engage all right, just something doesnt seem to be staying locked. Haynes shows a blow up of about a gazillion washers, spring clips, etc. on the halfshaft; mAybe something's awry there. Unfortunately the manual doesnt show much more than that on how it all works and where the shift motor comes in.
Regarding the manual hubs, wonder if I took a trip to the pick and pull junkyard in the spring if I could get away with mid 80's locking hubs. Any thoughts ??
Jettison the fragile and tempermental auto hubs. BTW, electric shift 4WD and auto hubs were standard equipment back 94 but for a $100 or so credit you could have manual. Therefore, you might investigate weather factory manual hubs for a similar year would fit if you're interested in junkyarding them. Myself, I went with new Warns; I'm familiar with the sounds you are describing.
