It was running fine. Turned it off and now only a click. I had the battery checked and even put another battery in. Still only a click. Put a new starter solenoid in it, only a click. The negative battery cable looked bad, replaced it and only a click. I have the cable from the solenoid to starter coming tomorrow. I guess the starter after that?
You can pull the starter and then use jumper cables to put full battery power to it. One on the case and one on the hot terminal. When you touch the cable to the hot terminal the starter will spin and move and it will probably make you jump. you don't have to clamp the hot one on, just hold it there for a moment and see if it spins. sort of a backwoods way of doing it but that is where I live!
By the way, what are you working on? A pic of the setup might get you a little more help!
Very nice truck!
If it is a 6 cylinder you can put the positive cable directly on the starter from underneath the hood without taking the starter off. You can do that with a V8 but it is harder to get at.
As already posted, visually check your battery connections. They've got to be free of corrosion and in good shape. Also, instead of throwing parts at it, do some simple troubleshooting. The simple volt meters that Horror Freight used to give away are useful for this. Check to make sure you have 12 volts to every place that needs it. Follow the voltage path to the starter while a buddy tries to start it, obviously making sure that your truck is out of gear and in neutral.
Let us know what you find.
I’ve got 12 volts to the solenoid, but going to the starter I’ve only got 9.5 volts. When I used jumper cables to the starter all I got was sparks. The starter did not turn.
You probably need to remove and check it out. Mine is waiting for the same thing. My starter just makes a horrible loud humming noise. Maybe I shouldn't have backed up using the starter motor when it wouldn't start to get it in position to tow to the garage.

Perhaps it is shorted out, but you will get sparks if you do not hold it firmly on the starter. The voltage will jump the gap you create. However, if it truly is shorted out, if you put your meter on the neg terminal of the battery and the case of the starter what do you get. Normally you should get nothing but if it is shorted out you will get voltage of some sort. If you disconnect the cable from the solenoid that goes to the starter and try to start it, are you getting power through the solenoid to the terminal that goes to the starter? If so, it is either a bad ground, bad cable going to hot terminal on starter or bad starter. The starter comes out fairly easy on these trucks as there is quite a bit of room to work. It does involve laying on you back or hanging down into the job from the top side.
Oh yeah, nice looking truck by the way! I have been looking for those ventshades that go above the windows for my truck but they are not being made now and haven't seen any around. I like the original wheels and tires as well.
It’s been awhile. Finally got a friend that is a mechanic to look at the truck. He took the flywheel cover off and thought that the bendix looked wedged in against the flywheel. Took off the starter and everything look ok. When the starter was put back on the engine turned and started right up after having sit for two and a half weeks. I’m puzzled at why this happened. I’m considering buying a new starter and bendix!
