Changed starter still doesn't start
Hi guys, I shut my 1999 Ford f250 off. When I went to restart it, it wouldn't start. A mechanic diagnose the problems as a bad starter. Replaced the starter now it turns over once then nothing. Took starter back out and had it tested along with the battery. Started tested fine and battery tested at 89%. So wondering if anyone has any ideas to what the problems is cause I'm at a loss. Thanks for your time
I agree, it sounds like the positive cable could be corroded in the battery clamp. I had a '04 that wouldn't charge right and had intermittent starter issues. Cleaned the posts to no avail. Finally found it to be where wire connects to battery connector. It looked like new but was crap. If it was jostled or moved just a fraction it would either make or break the circuit.
Edit to add: Check crimps at the frame on neg cable and the positive at starter. They can also be a issue over time.

Thanks for the info guys, I used a multi meter on battery, solenoid and starter reading was all the same 12.65 volts. Was told by local mechanic that it still could be the battery not putting out enough amps
Does that sound right to you. Thanks for your time

For now, at least eyeball/check all your connections for tightness and being clean. Can’t really check the inside of the cables.
I had a new 99 Expedition that after about two years had a random no start issue. Was a bad battery cable.

Are absolutely sure the original starter was bad? A cable connection or a battery with internal issues will cause these problems. That being said unless the starter you replaced is bad I'd be willing to bet your original starter may have still been OK.
It quit cranking so you replaced it and now it still doesn't crank properly. Think about it...

Lets not go crazy on this..Get a good pair of jumper cables. go from battery ground to the engine ground/block/starter etc..try it. No change do the same with the positive. Go from batt pos to starter big wire. Try it. I have had both wires go bad pos one at the starter neg one at the frame..
If still nothing connect battery directly to the starter pos and starter frame with jumpers. Try it. Double and tripple check all your jumper connections....Voltage measurements mean little.

Thanks guys I think I may have found the problem. The ground screw on the new starter is stripped out and will not stay tight, so I'll be returning it to the auto parts store tomorrow. I'll let you know if that solves my problem. Thanks for taking the time to try and help a guy out
