I noticed out of the blue one day that I couldn't get the driver door to fully close. I pull the door close and it only catches on the safety. I have to roll down the window and pull (hard) on the door to get it to latch fully...and even then it will randomly open into the safety position.
No obstructions. Sprayed the latch mechanism with WD 40. Replaced the weather stripping but that was like 3 or 4 years ago so it can't be that. This happened out of the blue.
From the outside, close the door slowly and watch to see if the door seems to lift a bit as it approaches the second latch. That would be a good indication of hinge wear.

No movement up or down at all when you close the door.
Very little if any resistance when you try to open the door from the outside. Does anyone know if the driver side door latches are the same front to rear? Thinking of swapping them until I can get a new one delivered.
I have a theory on this. I notice that mine does this a lot too. When I am alone (or the last to close the door from the outside), I think the air pressure from the cabin is too great and it has a harder time closing all the way. I always have to give it an extra 'bump' after I close it if it's the only or last door closed from the outside. Just a thought.
...I thought the same, but even when I left the back side windows open the door wouldn't close.
I ordered a new latch assembly and it not only closes prefectly, the old "rattle" has been eliminated and there is zero play in interior and exterior door handles.
Hoping to find new latches for the other three doors. I want to say the driver door latch was about $36 and took about 35 minutes to replace. Screwdrivers, torx driver, flashlight and some cussing was all it took.
My new theory is a spring or some other component inside of the assembly broke.
Yeah, when I went back and re-read the post stream I realized you must have had a different problem. Mine just 'bounces' off the air pressure if I close it carelessly. If I close it with more attention it is fine.

In my garage, cussing is not last on that list. I'm not sure that it really helps, but it keeps my blood pressure down so it certainly doesn't hurt.

I'm wondering if that bounce is related to the door seals. They're now 20 years old and not nearly as flexible as they once were. I suspect that the door takes a bit more force than it once did and the air pressure is just one more piece of resistance.
