Hi all,
I just bought a 90 f-350. It has pieces of diamond plate where the vent windows should be. Has anyone changed them before. What does the job entail and are there pieces inside the door to hold it that I would need?
This little part is the only attachment the vent windows have. It lets you swivel the vent. Post holes etc. are already built in. I'm not sure how or IF you can replace the swivel piece as the bracket disappears in the rubber molding. Best place for replacements would be the Salvage yard if they are handy.
Don't see why anyone would put diamond plate there to create a huge blind spot.
The glass can be removed from the fame and a glass shop should be able to order a new ones. That might be the easiest route if the frame isn't damaged. But could be the most expensive.
The whole assembly bolts into the door near the speaker and with 2 bolts on the top of the door frame and can be replaced that way as well, but it could involve removing the side glass too. This could be fairly inexpensive if you go to a salvage yard or find a parts truck.
Here is one video, but there are a few others if you search for OBS vent window replacement.
The vent window assembly and main window front track are all one piece, it is secured in the door with a bolt through the inner door panel below the vent and 2 bolts through the sloped edge of the door under the rubber seal.. I have never tried to replace the glass in one of these so I don't know how much fun that would be, but I have removed and installed the whole assembly and I think that would be easier.
If the metal frame that holds the glass is still there, LMC Truck has the seals and glass. I would do what TexasGuy mentioned - junkyard or have a local auto glass shop get new glass.
Thanks everyone. I just brought the truck home today. Looks like the glass was replaced with the diamond plate but the rest is still there. Some extendable towing mirrors are bolted to the plate so I'm guessing they did it to install the mirrors. I'm going to call around to the local salvage yards and try to get some windows and replacement mirrors. I'll post some pics when I do the repairs.
Find a matching color truck and take its doors. Easier if you have manual windows and no electrical on the door and if you have no special molding or anything. But an option none the less

Swapping out a heavy door by yourself and getting it adjusted is, imo, a lot harder than unbolting some parts and bolting in the “new” ones.
The whole wing window assembly can be changed in seconds.. well a minute.. it's not at all hard to do... no need to change the door.
Are you saying the vent window is nicer than say gms from the 70s-80s? And am I hearing wrong or the window regulator and vent window can be bolted together then installed..? Or..
I don’t know how the General’s goes together. The window regulator has nothing to do with anything. The vent window assembly is also the front window track. It only has two nuts and a screw that hold it to the door. You might have to remove the large glass to get it out. I’m not sure. I have only removed the vent window assembly when completely disassembling the door to get sandblasted.
@Ben5360 I bought a complete cab from an '88 to use as a donor for my '97 project. I'm using the doors but have to swap the vent windows to the newer style. After I strip the doors I can send you the parts you'll need if you're interested.

I gotcha. I think I had my visual in my head wrong but I get it now. I was imagining a assembled off-door window combo that then goes into the door.
