Tire Question

I got a 96 F350 dually 2wd. I remember alot of old 2wd duallies back in the 80's - 90's running highway tires on the inner rear wheels and a combo tire on the outer rear wheel. They had a mild or highway tread down the center of the tire, but more aggressive cleats/lugs on the edge of the tire/sidewall. I assume this was for trailers on the road, but a little extra help getting the 2wd trucks out of the field. Does anyone still make this style of tire, and what is it called? Having trouble searching for one,
Thanks

I've never heard of mismatching tires, and I was pretty heavy into 4x4s in the 90's. I'm not saying people didn't do it, but there's probably a reason you don't hear about it any more.
I would bet the problems that develop from mismatching tires outweighs any performance gain you get from the partial aggressive tire.
A Nice all-terrain tire in all position will go along way. Or just get hiway tires since the performance difference between hiway tires and all terrains tires are negligible on a 1 ton truck.

Id think anything but a matched pair on each side is just asking for vibrations or weird road behavior. If anything, the inner tire being the tallest(least worn if both the same size) would be wise I guess.

OP, I think what you may be remembering is what happens when the tires are not maintained to proper pressure and the center wears (If you air up for a load and then you never air down, Id imagine those centers wipe when unloaded and driving)

I also dont think a dually 2wd is the best truck to bring into a field but no judgements , just seems like it would be out of the ideal environment.
