Just picked up a '08 4X4 dually and the tires are worn out (245/75r17). Truck is going to be used to tow a toy hauler around 16k. Would a 285/70r17 be a good tire to replace the 245's? Should I just stick with the 245's?
Personally I'd stick with the 245s, because unless you add wheel spacers or different wheels the 285s will rub sidewalls when loaded with that heavy of a camper. Rubbing sidewalls WILL cause blowouts. The danger of wheel spacers is that usually your lug studs need to be lengthened, and IIRC most spacers come with a warning that your payload (and thus tow rating) are reduced.
The reason 285/70R17's come up as a suggested tire size is because they are roughly the same overall height as the 245/75R17's, and are either the stock or an optional size for the single-rear-wheel trucks.
If your concern is tire availability, then yes, the 245's don't come in as many tread patterns, but you can almost always find some to suit your needs.

Terms like "Usually need to be lengthened" and "Most come with a warning" Means they are not the correct spacers for the required task. Stahl Steel anodized spacers with correct studs should be fine and don't rust. or Bora anodized spacers in 6061-T6 Al come with a lifetime warranty. Yes I am putting 315 75 16 on my 2004 Dually with 6" lift. 2" spacers between rears. and 1" behind inside to clear leafs. All Hub Centric. Spacers take much longer to arrive than tires.

I run 265/75x16 tires on my DRW truck. I use 1.5" spacers and actually had to shorten my wheel studs to install the spacers. If you need to install longer studs you are using the wrong spacer. My inner wheel is held in place by the lug nuts on the wheel hub holding the spacer in place. The outer wheel is held in place by the lug nuts on the spacer lug studs. All torqued to 120# and checked every 5k miles . I tow a 5th wheel trailer of 11k and 2800# pin weight with no issues .

Absolutely correct.
I would like to see your setup. I've been thinking about running the 265/75R17 on my 2012. Do you need the full 1.5" spacer? What brand spacer did you use? Do you have a link?

I know the question was not directed at me but I replaced 265's on my Dually. It had 1" spacer. The truck has a 6" lift but that is irrelevant to spacer size. Picture in Primer is with the 265's with 1" and In Blue is with 315"s and 2 inch Bora Aluminum spacer. 265's 265's 315's 265's
Man, Your truck looks really good with the 315s and the lift. Thanks for sharing!
.I don't want to do a lift; I just want a little taller tire. I'm not sure the 265s are the right option but they are a little taller than the 245s.
Well thank you. I'm happy with how it turned out. The 265's are suggested as the largest tire for stock height trucks. The lift was on the truck when I bought it. Not something I would have done otherwise.
