Maybe you guys can help me out with a question I have. I'm I called the tire place and 2 people really could offer me no help other than "check out our website and figure out what you want"
I just got some new wheels for the front and rear, the stock 15's (5" wide) in front and 16"s in back (8"wide/4inch backspacing) on the front I'm just going to replace the front wheel and tire with the same size 205-75-r15. On the back what size would be good for a 16"wheel without looking like an offroad tire? Maybe like a roundabout sizewould help me, I asked the tire people for a suggestion and I got "Ummmmm, hmmm Ummmm...well we can get you low profile tires". I thought the rears would be 205-75-r16 but apparently thats wrong. I appriciate any suggestions/help.
Joe, the 8" width of you rear wheels will dictate the tire size to some degree. The front p205/75r15 tires are fine on 5" wheels, and have a height of 27.05", according to my Cooper spec book. A good match for that 8" rim would be a p255/70r16, at 29.95 tall with a 10.3" section width. That's a standard SUV size tire, popular on explorers. Other sizes that would also work are p265/75r16, 31.5" tall, 10.6 wide, or p265/70r16, 30.4" tall, 10.8 wide. Again, those are all popular SUV sizes. You wouldn't want to go much narrower than a 255/70 with that 8" rim, and going to a sedan size that would work on that rim, such as a 225/60r16 or 235/60 would be a little short. As far as not looking like an all terrain tire, the Cooper Discoverer HT, Pirelli Scorpion STR, and Yokohama Geolander HTS are all examples of SUV tires designed for on road only use, and would like good on a hot rod truck. There's lots of private brand tires that are available in that type, also. I'll probably run the Discoverer HT on my truck, because of the mild tread, and numerous sizes it's available in. Let me know if you need more info, I've got tire specs on almost everything.
The lack of availability of good looking 16 inch street tires is the reason I decided to stay with 15's all around. I am sure, however, that if you keep looking you will find a tire to your liking. Good luck.
