As I've have been cleaning up this 302 from the '96 Explorer I started wondering if it's possible to use the upper and lower intakes in the truck. Obviously, the air intake would need to be modified a little and since the air pump equipment would be eliminated that would free up the space on the right fender. The throttle and cruise control cables would need a custom bracket I'm sure. Other than that, would it be feasible to use the Explorer intake or is it just better to swap the truck intakes over and be done with it?
The stock truck 302 intake is a good piece as is. I don't think you will find any performance advantage swapping to the explorer version, which should be a cast version of the GT40 intake. The explorer intake isn't bad just not better and not worth the trouble.
X3. It would be okay in a lighter vehicle. But the long runners help the low torque 302 get these trucks moving. Stick with the truck intake, you will be happier.
I would hope you would swap in spicier camshaft while the other long block is out. Unless you have, disregard
I had debated on doing that but I don't think I will. This is supposed to be just a drop in and go deal. The newer 302 is rated about 30 more hp than the hamster wheel that's in there now so I'm sure it'll be fine. If I'm going to spend the extra money on internals I would much rather do it on a 351w. Then again, I am a sucker for more power and noise...
Ther Explorer/GT40 intake is still considered to be a long runner version and there isn't enough of a difference in runner length between it and the truck intake to make a noticable difference. Plus both of these intakes are much larger in terms of airflow capacity than a stock 5.0 needs so it's a bunch of work for no gain on a stock motor, if you really want an intake that will maximize torque go find a 5.0HO version.
