Hey guys, been having a slight issue with my early 99. Doesn't matter what tune it's on, I can replicate the issue on any tune. The issue is when giving it medium throttle (around 2400-2500 rpm) in 3rd gear, the torque converter locks up early. It's kinda hard to put into words, but it happens most when I'm gradually bringing the rpms up. So say the rpms are at 2200rpms and I want to roll into it and bring the rpms up to 3000ish. It will get to about 2500 and I'll still be pushing the pedal down further, but then the converter locks up and bogs the truck down. The truck shifts fine and does not do this both with normal acceleration (2000-2200 rpms) and WOT.
It didn't use to do this so maybe it's just a sign that the trans is on its way out? I can post a video of it if y'all would like.
By "any tune" do you mean different companies or different tunes? For example PHP, 1023, SDK for the companies and Cummins Killer, 65 HP and daily driver for the tunes.
Have you tried "no tune" or 00 on the Hydra or remove the chip if it is a TS6. If you go to 00 on the Hydra, turn the ignition to on, switch to 00, wait 3 seconds, switch the ignition to OFF, wait 3 seconds and then the PCM is in OEM tuning bypass mode.
Other than that, Mark K will be along shortly with a to the point post that is likely dead on the bullseye...
By any tune, I meant both any company and any tune. So it does it on 1023, jelibuilt, php as well as any tune from those companies like daily driver, tow, cummins killer, hot street, etc. Have not tried the oem tune, but that was my next variable to test. I didn't know you could go back to oem tuning with the hydra still connected. That makes it a lot easier than having to pull the chip. Thanks for the heads up!
It is very possible I'm just not used to it. When the converter locks, it still has plenty of grunt to pull. The "bog" feeling could totally just be me thinking it's bogging down. When I slowly push the pedal down more and expect the rpms to keep increasing, the converter locks which I am not expecting. I should've asked this first, but is it totally normal for the converter to lock around 2500rpm even if I'm slowly increasing the throttle position?
For the longest time, I would rarely bring the truck over 2200 rpms unless I needed to. Recently I've been driving it harder than normal because I don't drive it nearly as often as I used to. So when I drive it, I want to give it a good workout. So it could just be I'm not used to the converter locking like it does at higher rpms.
The problem is that you don't like any of the tunes. There is nothing wrong with the transmission, the problem is that the tune tells the converter to lock earlier than you like.

So what you're saying is that my genius is too much for the 4r100 to handle
But yeah you're right. I think that the truck should rev more before it locks. However, the transmission/tunes do not agree.
The torque converter locks when it is told to lock by the PCM. It does not have any input to when it is going to lock, that is 100% the PCM controlled by the tunes.

remove the tuner completely. Does it still
do the early shift?
