RPM drop ?

When my truck changes from 3 to 4 and the RPM drops my engine sounds like it is lugging. The drop is so sudden it's like you just turned the truck off. It goes from about 2600 to 1500 in less than a milla second. Now I know it's gonna drop but this doesn't feel normal it also feels like it surges after it changes and sometimes when you put it to the floor it feels like it skips. What's up with that?

hi Ford-man22,
How many miles on it?
Might be still learning your driving habits.

It does sound as if your coverter isn't unlocking for the shift. Normally it goes
1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear, converter locks, 4th gear converter unlocked, then 4th gear converter locked.
Gives you 6 'virtual' ratios. Seems as if your going from third locked to fourth locked, without the small transition unlocking of the converter.
I can get mine to do that, if I'm going down a very slight grade, and have almost no pressure on the throttle. It doesn't unlock when moving from third locked to fourth locked. But it's too slight to be even annoying.
Might be a reason for a reflash, or just disconnecting the battery cable for five minutes and letting it relearn your shift habits. Rebooting, so to speak.
Anybody have any other ideas?
Chris

Mine sounds/feels like it is lugging sometimes and I'll look at the tach and it's at about 1000 rpm when I'm doing about 45 or so. I don't drive much over that on most of the roads I am on so alot of times I am at right around 40-45. Doesn't bother me too much.

Hey Chris and Birdhunter...Most of my driving to work is right around 45-50 mph. I've taken to keeping OD off whenever I drive (unless I expect to exceed 60 for any length of time). Do you do the same, or keep it normal?

I'm figuring less TC lock/unlock cycling is better. Any thoughts?

If I'm in heavy hills I do, especially if I am going in the 40-45 range or pulling a boat to the lake. The road I always take is a PITA even without a boat, though I have only trailered it once since I got the truck.

I think I would turn of the OD, that's assuming you won't be driving 60+ later, without remembering to turn it back on...
On my truck I added a tuner and Magnaflow. She don't lug any more..
But for now go with turning the OD off if you are lugging.

Hey Chris and Bird Hunter, I do a lot of highway driving so I normally stay anywhere between 60 and 75. I think your right about my driving habits. The truck only has about 6500 miles on it and has had NO problems ( as expected, I have good luck with FORD). I'm only 22 so you'll know what that means, foot to floor. I graduated from a 4.0L V6 5-speed in my old Ranger 4x4 so diving an automatic is a little new to me. When I first bought the truck I drove it kind of hard, never really getting above 2600 to 3000 RPM, so maybe the truck is just expecting me to drive that way every time I get in it. I'm gonna get the Dioblo sport tunner, pipes and intake when I get my tax return. Hey chris, can you return to your stock program later on if you want to?

Sure Ford-man22. The tuner is totally easy to use. I use a superchips, but I'm sure they are all easy. You plug it into the socket below the steering wheel, and follow the simple directions. Total no brainer. The stock settings work pretty good. Or you can play with them. When you want to take it back to the dealer, just reload the stock settings, which are saved in the tuner. Takes about 15 minutes, mostly just letting it load.

If you want to retrain the PCM before you get the tuner, just unhook the negative cable, leave it off for 5 minutes, then hook it back up. Your idle may suffer for a few miles. Drive it at all speeds that you use, and be sure and let it idle for five minutes or so during the first 100 miles. Gun it up a few times too. Just let it learn the various patterns expected. This is covered in the owners manual, I think.
Oh, when you disconnect the battery, you lose the trip od settings. Just in case it matters.
Good luck,
Chris
