2016 heated steering wheel

Morning Folks, apologies in advance. I've tried googling and the search function of the forums to no joy.

I've got a 2016 f150 Lariat that when I got it 2020 had an incredible hot steering wheel warmer. However, I noticed that when it was colder than 40 degrees F it wouldn't turn on and some of the right hand controls and areas of the horn wouldn't work until the cab warmed up to around 65 degrees F. I chalked this up to the clock spring being bad and ordered a new one. New one is in and the wheel is still cold. All the buttons work though (haven't tried out the horn yet). Next step is testing the element and any other components of that system. I don't have the adaptive steering that I've seen a lot of posts on, and figure my problem might be the Heated Steering Wheel Module. Does anyone have specs, Ohms and voltages that I should be looking for?

I got used to getting into a hot truck with a toasty steering wheel.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Small update for those having similar issues.

The heated steering wheel is working intermittently, I've figured out that it works if the cab temp is above 70+ degrees. My horn is also not working on the top half. Don't know if its a worn out connection or tied into the rest of the problem. I've taken off the driverside kick panel and found a ton of rust. When I bought the truck it had the driver side drain hose for the sunroof. I fixed it after seeing water pour out of the driver side grab handle. I cleaned off the ground that I found there, but no change to either problem. Anyone know of a ground on the driver side that is tied into either issue I've got?

You have an issue that no one that I know of has brought up before. As these trucks age though, more new issue will arise.

I don’t have a heated wheel. Does it have it’s own control or is it tied to the rear window defrost?

Hello! Thanks for replying.

It doesn't have a physical button, only through the touch screen can you turn it on. Either from the home screen or the climate control screen. Thankfully the heated seats have physical buttons.

Do all the other controls on the steering wheel work?
The first thing that should be common between the horn and steering wheel heat is the clock spring.

I did have button failure when it was around 20 degrees in the cab. However, I have replaced the clock spring two weeks ago. No button failures but same issue with horn and the heated steering wheel.

may be worth looking at wire harness in the steering wheel. if multiple issues on wheel controls then might be worth a look.

Thanks for this advice!

It seems it was my cabin air temp sensor. Replacing that fixed the heated steering wheel, and auto climate control. Now just need to take apart the steering wheel and column to find the short for the top half of my horn.
