My point is that I see a similar principle. IF I can sell for more, I will. I don't blame them. I support them because when it is my turn to do so, I will. MSRP means Manufacturer (Ford) SUGGESTED Retail Price. Ford can suggest anything they want. The dealer can discount it and they have in the past when they needed to move it and you don't whine. Therefore, if they want to mark it up because the market will bear it, don't whine.
Well, yes. Point well made. However, when I find a dealer is an outlier on the high end of pricing, I make a note, and don't shop there. Not out of anger, just out of recognition that their attitude is probably not going to agree with mine. I like the dealers (few, but they exist) that are interested in developing a loyal following of customers as a result of giving customers exceptional service and value for their money. That is the kind of free market practice I like... as opposed to wring out every cent of every person that walks through their door... also free-market.
But my very favorite free-market practice is the one where I get to decide how to spend my money!

It's your money, spend it where you want. If that brings you a better deal, the mission is successful. If it becomes like the OP's situation where he thought his loyalty bought him something and it didn't, well......You did get to decide, at least. Not sure of the good it did besides make you feel like you have some way of punishing the dealer who probably didn't even know you existed or felt the punishment. I give my favorite places the last look. I shop them last. They beat the price, we buy. They don't, I'm walking to my new friend. I bring them the number as "This is the price to beat.".
Ford has been doomed for awhile.....see when you build trucks that take extreme abusive and last for decades then why buy one every year, I don't. After I buy my 1994 I waited till 2021 for a new one. If Ford needed my money they will have to wait till 2046 for me to be in the market again.
I was planning to order a new SD next week when the order banks opened. I have bought a new truck every year for the last 10+ years, I know financial planners come screaming, this is not a wise financial decision! However, I digress.
I called two dealerships today, one I bought 7 new SDs from and the other I bought 2 new SDs from. Both told me MSRP on all orders, no exceptions! Neither will accept X Plan. This is absolutely unacceptable in my eyes. They are making short term decisions at the expense of long-term customer loyalty.
Not only will I never buy from these two again, I'm looking at GMC and RAMs now.
Not a wise customer retention strategy Ford! You may want to study business history, Pan Am Airlines and GE would be a good place to start. This is not going to end well for Ford, such a shame to see an iconic brand losing their way!
If I am taking this too personal, please fire away! Thanks for listening to my rant!
Here is what you do, the dealers you bought a lot of vehicles from in the past probably don't even know you did so unless you worked with the same sales guy all during that time. All you have to do is point out that over the past so many years all the money you spent with them and if they can't do you a solid with an X-plan, tell them, you are gone. Let them decide if they want to keep a long time customer or not.
I still visit the dealer I originally bought my first F-150 from, though it came under a new owner shortly after, and then bought a 99 F-350 DRW. Since then I spent well over a half million $$ with them on new and used vehicles so they don't even bat an eye when I asked for X-plan. If your dealer can't do this, F em, move on. Their loss, not yours.
Op, the deal with the current market is the absurd price your used truck will bring. I paid msrp for my 2022 but i had a 2500 cash ticket from form ford which helped, but the big one was getting $50k for a 2019 with a 155k on it.
Wait till ordeer book opens and you see what you cant order any more. You will be pissed again
Cant get SD build info so did a build of a 150 and they have dropped Extended cab with leather seats. Only get Cloth seats and only a XL or XLT
Sad the options they are dropping especially when they made them last year
Waiting for SD build to open to see what they have dropped of of them ?????????????
Not sure if just ford but what has to hit a level of diminishing return is where ford nickels and dimes things I’ve had a new f350 every year for 8 years and everyone has something noticeably cheaper or missing. The latest is all blamed on covid conveinienty.

The guy who sold GM yesterday might be the guy selling Dodge tomorrow. The Chevy salesman I talked to sold me a HD a few years back. So you had this great relationship with that salesman and he moved on to something totally different. That is today's world where I can graduate from college here and move 5 states away and get a job only to move a couple states away and get a totally different job. IMO, pointing things like that out is not a good idea. If they don't already know you after all this time, why even bother? Why do you even care about this long time customer crap? Unless you have a pledge with them to give them all your business in return for certain considerations in writing, just shop around. When I am done shopping, lowest bid takes it. Why be married to some dealership in hopes you get something more? My favorite CanAm dealer knows he has the last bid and he knows that we shop and he will know what price he has to beat. If he does, he gets the business. If not, no hard feelings.
I guess you never had a good relationship then. I have bought several vehicles in the past from them, from one sales guy who retired in 2019, and Never dickered with them. Always paid invoice or less. I call him up ask how much, and gives me the invoice price. When I placed the order for the 22 last February, I asked if they will accept Xplan, no problem. No money down, or any BS. I work directly with the owner now. He said, if I don't buy it, he will have a nice truck on his lot to sell. They also do not do markups, they sell at MSRP. I asked if he would buy my 2012 F350, and he did, gave me what I wanted for it too.

Some dealers like this DO exist.
I know they DO exist. I had a friend that did exactly as you said. Very nice people. Only one problem. I got better elsewhere. You may be the favorite dealer but I am going to shop and give you the last shot so you know what the price is to beat. Beat it and we do business. Fail to and I go to the best price. I don't depend on the relationship to get best price and I certainly don't believe you have the best price without verification. Good relationship gets you to the last person I check.
So I am strongly leaning to order a 2023 F350 this Thursday.
Just for kicks, i reached out to a sales lady at a jeep/Ram dealership that i purchased two wranglers from in the last 3 years. I told her i might be interested in a 3500 RAM.
She quoted me "Invoice" on my build, which shook out to be about $4500 off of MSRP. I almost went for it.
She told me however that it would be 6-7months if i ordered today. Sorry.
I have talked to 5 dealers about a new ford. Everyone agrees that they wont charge additional dealer markup but nobody wants to go below MSRP.

Maybe it is just the area you are in. If everyone does it, I'll do it. I have no doubt that somehow they shop each other one way or the other. "So how bad do you want it?" is the question. Now if a larger recession than they thought occurs and supply eases up, they might try to cut each other's throat.

there's more I consider in a purchase than going with whoever is $100 cheaper. .....I buy my trucks (I have a small fleet) at what I consider to be a fair price, not the lowest I can beat up or pit 4-5 dealers against each other. Not sure I'd be all that excited to be the last dealer you approach after price shopping several others...
