Where does this broken ground go?

05 f350

I presume this is a ground wire, rather then trying to put a new eye on it, I figured id see where it belongs and just put a whole new cable one

So, where do the ends of this cable go?

The negative cable from the passenger battery goes down to a lug on the front of the engine block, then has a leg which goes to the frame. Almost looks like someone has replaced it before.

so not anything to be concerned about not being connected ?

I could not follow the cable from the battery to the block, but I did see a welder like cable running from the head to the frame

There was no broken eye under the bolt that holds that ground wire in, so it may be that was the location of the old wire

They probably jumped from the head to the frame to replace it.

Anyway, here is a video I did some time ago about the negative/ground circuits in our trucks.

Cool, I watched that video a few times

I think I came across it trying to find specifics on G400 (which had broken clear off on mine)

that got me thinking i should probably clean the grounds on the engine bay as well and that's how I ended up here

Do you think adding a ground from the head to the passenger battery would be beneficial?

I'm having a hard time getting this truck to start, especially when it sits for a while

The batteries are Optima red tops and about 4 years old

If the truck doesn't start in 2 or 3 tries the batteries drain so far you can hear the cranking slowing down

I probably need new batteries but they are so stinking expensive

It dones't sound like there is sufficient reserve in those batteries, or they might not be fully charged. You can charge them and then get them tested for free at many auto parts stores. I've been using Walmart MAXX 65 for quite a few years, they are good and reasonable.

I would go through all the connection points I noted in the video. Adding a 1/0 cable from the engine block or head to either the drivers side frame ground or directly to the battery is beneficial. If you need to replace all the cables, CustomBatteryCable.com is a good deal. Also sold at XDP.

There are many reasons for this truck not to start well, but electrical function is a good place to start. If you are going to ask for help or need diagnosis, the best deal you can do is ForScan App for your cell phone and an OBD2 adaptor for the version of the phone. Total cost about $35-40, and you get very good quality monitoring. Many threads here and elsewhere about doing that.

Thanks, I'll go through the res lt of the grounds, and add one from the head to the battery

I'll also have the batteries tested and report back, hopefully that will cover it

Does that scan app also come on laptops?
I should still have an OBD/USB plug kicking around from my VW days

If I do need new batteries would those wallieworlds be up to the strain of being in a plow truck?

I was thinking of getting Odessey 65-PC1750Ts, but man, they are expensive

A version is available for laptops. But I don’t have it. It’s very good.

Batteries are for storage, the question would be is your alternator is up to the task? If the batteries are being used because the alternator doesn’t supply enough, no batteries will hold out.

Plow truck explains the rust.
