How does driving 90 miles with a loose plug damage the short block? Raw fuel will overheat the cat. If you know a plug was ejected, unplug the injector and limp to a shop. Might be easier said than done.
Thanks for all the info on this. I'll pass it all along to the owner and also have her look through all the service records to see if plugs have ever been changed out. The original owner was very good on maintenance and repairs and keeping paperwork so if it was done I'm sure she will find it. If not, considering the mileage and age I'll let her know it wouldn't hurt to have them replaced just for peace of mind sake if she cares.

Sixto
07 E350 5.4 189K miles
He said didn't know the plug was ejected, he thought is was misfiring until he heard the racket. Raw fuel in the cylinder washed the oil out of the rings and the friction destroyed the rings, the piston and the bore. Yes, he should have unpluged the injector. On a V10 E450 you have to remove the doghouse to get to most of the plugs, coil packs and injectors. Costly mistake.

That would be doing a good deed to whoever will be buying this chassis. I don't see any reference to the current mileage but if the plugs/boots haven't been changed in over 60K miles I'd plan on that being a first step. Boots can deteriorate with age especially if the engine sits idle for long periods of time. At this same time checking torque could and should be done.
When I buy another E-Series first thing I'll check is oil pressure at hot idle---that would be very important from my experience. Using a dedicated oil pressure testing gauge connected to the factory port on the oil filter adapter rail would give an idea of how the oil pump is performing, a bit of indication how bearing clearances are holding up.
Will you be doing any of the maintenance? IMHO there are too many shops not concerned with following what's become an accepted procedure to what should be a relatively simple maintenance task. I've always thought incorrect plug installation has or will lead to an ejected plug.
JWA, your suggestion for the plugs is a good one, My F350 sits the majority of the year, I think I only put about 200 miles on it this year, Probably not a bad idea for the plug change as winters coming on and I've owned the truck for 5 years now? and haven't thought about the plugs it has a little over 137K on it.

No maintenance from me here. I'm just her friend who was local to the truck to check it out for her and then drive it up and deliver it to her. I told here I would check it out the best I could but no guarantees as I'm not doing a full PPI on it, just checking on the basics and overall worthiness. Luckily they had all the maintenance records and recent (within the last year) maintenance that was pretty thorough.
