V-10 Durability
V-10 Durability
I am looking to replace my 84 F-250 with a Super Duty. I am going the gas route because I don't drive enough miles to justify the extra $ for a PSD. I've seen a few V-10's but some have over 100,000 miles. One I looked started up and sounded great. I haven't taken it for a drive yet. What is the typical life of a V-10? Am I wrong to be looking at anything over 100K?
What year is the SD with 100K on it? A couple hundred bucks (it may be more, it probably is less; I don't know off hand) might be well spent on an engine dyno for peace of mind BEFORE buying it. Also, ask the owner where he/she gets it serviced? If it's at a dealership, contact them and get a history of the service on that particular vehicle. If it's a 4-wheel drive truck, SERIOUSLY consider a full check-up by a neutral party. It amazes me how people jump in and spend $10-$20K on a used vehicle but bawk at spending an initial couple hundred to make sure they're not getting a lemon. Call it cheap insurance; call me crazy.... !

I own a V10 and maintain 2 V-10s housed in F450 wreckers. The wreckers both have over 100K no problems. Nothing major anyway, plug injector here, fuel pump there, but solid motor.
These things are not driven nicley, the drivers really romp on them hard.
Diesils would be better in a work truck, but these 2 wreckers need to be quiet and start and go for a PD call if needed.
