just curious as to what peoples' opinions are on the best (top 2 or 3) truck engines made in the last 10 years. not meant to be a bashing thread of gas vs dsl or one brand vs the other. i'd just like to hear peoples objective opinions on what their 1st or 2nd hand experiences have been. i'm looking to get into the truck market and based on my current car, i want to make an informed decision and something i dont have to worry about (i know nothing is perfect and there are +s/-s of any type).
here's the criteria:
1. reliability
-least # of recalls/TSBs
2. longevity before rebuilds
3. truck that is used for an average persons needs
based on what i've read i'm leaning towards a SD 250 with V10 or 7.3PSD or 2500 ram megacab with Cummins 5.9
Thanks

The Triton V-10 powerplant rocks my face off.... 175k miles, absolutely no problems!! This engine will easily make it to 300k+ miles. Another vote for the V-10
Both the FORD modular engines (5.4L and V10) offered in the SD line are GREAT reliable engines. Of course...out of the two...I lean towards the V10.
Keeping it FORD...the 7.3L PSD is also a very good engine. The only complaint I see often...is the CPS going out.
The all new 6.4L PSD is on the waiting list for reliability. But...I am willing to bet that FORD did the homework necessary to make it the best ever PSD. Time will tell...
The 5.9L Cummins is a good diesel for sure. But the NEW 6.7L Cummins coming out now...is going to ROCK! Heck...it already meets the EPA ratings for 2010. The rest of the Dodge is pretty solid too. They are building a fair pickup.
I vote for the V10 for gas. It is by far the best engine I have ever owned and everyone I talk to love them. I'm so glad I got it. The thought of a V10 scared me off because I was thinking about getting 5 MPG unloaded, but I am glad my dealer talked me into it. The gas mileage isn't bad at all. For diesels, the 7.3 takes the cake again. I love the 5.9 Cummins, but the 7.3 has them beat in my mind, but I have never owned a diesel, just driven them.
Ford's Mod Motors are all pretty good (for overhead cammers )
Ford's 5.0 and 5.8's are good engines as well - strong, smooth, and still pretty good gas mileage. The 4.0 V6 is a good one in its applications as well.
The Cummins straight sixes that Dodge is using are pretty good too, as is the ol' 7.3 PSD. 6.0 and 6.4 PSD's seem a little peaky and finicky to me, esp. the 6.0.
Chebby's 5.7 vortec motors were and still are some very good engines, and I hear their 5.3 isn't too shabby either.
That's about where my list ends. Dodge's Magnum V8's are reasonably torquey, but I've never been impressed with the fuel economy or the throttle response (my 360 sucks gas like you wouldn't believe for a smallblock). I'm not so much into the Hemis either, because a) the owners tend to be d!cks and b) they have electronic throttles, MDS, and all that nonsense.
For every day use by a normal person (and keeping it Ford) I always liked the good old 302 in a 1/2 ton chassis. They built the stupid things for over 30 years, parts are common, they respond well to modifications, performance parts are abundant and the engine was easy to work on.
The modular series (4.6, 5.4 and V-10) have developed into wonderful engines, but early engineering problems almost doomed them to mediocrity.
I'm not a big fan of the small block Chevy for truck use. I've always thought it lacked coolant passages in the heads that caused longevity problems when you pulled or hauled. Chevy's #1 engine for trucks (in my book) was the good old stove-bolt 6. Not much power, but you had to really be trying to kill one.
As for Mopar, I'm not a huge Cummins fan. I think they are too noisey. I always did like the old Slant 6, another engine that you really had to try hard to kill. The 318 was a decent engine, not a lot of power but they worked well.
im not a diesel guy but those 7.3 are solid from what i hear...5.4 and the 6.8 also rock solid ...sure they arent the most powerful motors out there but i have yet to see dodges on original motors runnin over 300k..not sayin there isnt any out there but....chevy's 4.3 vortec... i loved that motor...but its a cheby c'mon...lets think where would the ford crowd be today without cheby?? lol
Guess that i'm the diffrent one.........7.3 Diesel here. Would not have anything else. Pulls really good, lots of power (with mods) and has never given me a bit of trouble.
