Parts of Cali are suspect absolutely. I have lived in San Diego all my life, 64 yrs. Got family that’s PD and their hands are tied.
I remember back when I was in college here and had a Chevy blazer and always had my surfboards in my rig and I came out of class early and saw a guy 1/2 way in the rear window. I pulled him out by his leg and b… the s… out of him.
Kinda like the code of the west back then, just gotta keep that mindset nowadays too unfortunatly.
Gotta protect your own nobody else will.

An alarm protects by scaring them off. A camera is after the fact.

I've been following this thread, and perhaps I missed it...

Has anyone actually provided a camera recommendation? I'm curious about personal preferences based on user experiences since when my new truck arrives, I plan on a newer camera than my old truck's.

No, no camera suggestions have been made. I did do some research and found what I think will be a good solution. I will save my thoughts on that solution until after I have installed it and used it.

I went with a Thinkware X800 for the front and rear camera, then I added the Thinkware Multiplexer to add 3 additional cameras. The additional cameras are for the sides and interior. I just bought them all today and will get them in a couple of days.

Thinkware X800:

UPDATE 10/25/2022:

So my credit card was used without my knowledge so I called the 3 places it was charged. I forgot I left my new AMEX card in my laptop bag. One was Boost Mobile, they are useless. The next place was Marriott Hotels in Oakland, they were useless on the first call, but not the second call I made later in the day (I'll get to that later). The third place was a company called Straight Marketing located in NJ. Called them up and they were great. Its a business-to-business ad company that helps you out with your google company page somehow. Anyway, the lady was nice enough to forward me the details of the transaction that was ultimately declined due to address and zip code not matching up to the credit card. I looked this person up on Google and he seems to be a classy individual. Of course the details were given to the Oakland PD, but they don't care. So I'll provide those details here for you. Do with them as you please.

So after getting these details, I called Marriott back. I just acted as if I was this person since I had all of his info. Apparently it was a "no show" to the reservation he made with my card. But on top of that, there were more than 15 other reservations he had made in the past year. My assumption is he didn't make those reservations on his dime.

Hence my point. I spend MY money on a camera, take pictures and give it to the cops. Think they will do more? Even if they do, go sue John Simmons and see how far you get. Say you do get him served and judgement goes against him. How will you collect? Meanwhile, best you can do is post his picture up here.

a camera isn't going to help. if anything its going to suck more being able to watch them take your stuff. they're usually wearing a hoodie and a covid mask.

spend the money on a console vault and a new window.

Like I said, even if you do apprehend them, what do you think will happen? Another slap on the wrist. Regardless, you will have to file an insurance claim after spending even more time with paperwork. Might as well skip to what you suggested. Console vault and window. BTDT a couple of times.

I think the problem is that people here are somewhat decent and assume that the perp will pay and hopefully learn his lesson, be a credit to his family, etc, etc. Not happening. He/she isn't getting better and all the victim is doing is getting themselves into more issues than necessarily at their own expense. Safe will mitigate some of the problems. Good thought.

You might as well leave the windows down and save yourself the trouble of having to repair the truck, and I am being serious. Forget cameras and cute little security alarms. They're just going to take what they want. So you have a camera, and it shows a video of a bravo mike wearing a covid mask and a hoodie? Great. WTH am I going to do with that? It's a waste of my time to even fill out a report.

Leave nothing in view. Nothing. Ever.

If you own a pistol, carry it. NEVER leave a pistol in a car, EVER. ALWAYS carry it. I am adamantly against stupid "truck holsters" and bs lockboxes. Besides, you will NEVER have the time to get to that weapon on the day you need it unless it's on you. In a past life I have drawn my sidearm multiple times while seated in a vehicle and not once would I have been able to, or able to in a time expedient fashion, produce it if it were anywhere but on my person. And if you're going somewhere that doesnt allow you to carry, DONT GO THERE.

And if you're going somewhere that you think you need a rifle, you either dont need to go there, or you need to be CARRYING the rifle, and if you're going to do that, don a plate carrier too because you're going somewhere I dont want to be.

When I travel to craphole cities for my regular job today, I will even flip up the back seats so the scum can see it's not worth it. Truck looks totally empty. Bear in mind, these people will break a window to steal a pair of flip flops. Their give a crud is broken.

Computer bags, organizers, backpacks, etc, etc, are just birthday wrapping paper for the scum. I know a couple that just got their SUV broken into at a restaurant in the middle of the day in my states most woke crime ridden city, and the scum broke every single side window on the SUV rather than open the doors just to be expedient and not have doors in their way or fiddle with locks and leave prints i guess. Robbed them blind and got two guns, ON VIDEO, and local LEO couldn't do anything but scribble out a pending report number and roll to the next call.

The VAST VAST VAST amount of portable electronics for sale on the secondary market (pawn, craigslist, marketplace, etc), as well as guns, are stolen from vehicles.

Anywhere and everywhere, when you abandon and walk away from your property, just assume that the property is there for the picking.
leave pistol in center console 95% of the time guy checking in, I'd probably make your head explode 🤣
