2021 F-250 Windshield Replacement

Hello,

Thank you for your time responding to this question. I really do appreciate it!

Just curious if anyone has been in this situation and how they resolved it.

A rock broke my windshield enough to require replacement. Apparently, the vehicle has a camera despite no evidence of lane assist features (must be only for collision avoidance). Safelite says I need to take it to a Ford dealer to "have the error codes cleared" so they can replace the windshield and not incur liability for a potential wreck caused by lane assist, etc. Ford dealer maintenance rep says clearing the codes may not be possible if the windshield is broke. I am concerned that I will either have the codes cleared and they will return before Safelite can complete the replacement or that the dealership will not be able to clear the codes as the windshield is broken.

How have other folks handled this?

Again, thank you for your time responding to this.

Daniel

I had my windshield replaced once on my 2018. Actually 3 times but for just one incident. The folks who replaced it (not SafeLite) botched it 2 times and did an OK job the final time. Only once was it calibrated and there was no mention of fault codes, liability, etc.

Because it was such a fiasco I decided that if it happens again I will be taking it to Ford for a replacement even if I have to I will just pay for it myself. It would be less stressful than messing with the companies who claim to know what they are doing, screw around with you (and the recalibrations), make excuses, and just don't get it right or use original Ford replacements.

As far as I know, dealerships don't actually have an in house glass installer. They farm it out to, usually local, glass installation companies. The same outfits you could go with directly. I've had crap windshield installations on other vehicles of mine that were done by a local place that also does them for some dealerships. Maybe they do a better job when hired by the dealership?

Just make sure you get genuine Ford OEM glass that says "Sound Screen" just over the spot where the VIN shows through. You will not be happy with anything else. As stated above I think your best shot is through a dealer.

SoundScreen® acoustic windshields and doors are specifically engineered performance parts installed in nearly all Ford and Lincoln models – canceling noise surrounding your vehicle and improving your overall experience within your vehicle.

These factory installed auto glass or original equipment parts reduce road, wind and other exterior noise to maintain the original quiet ride of your vehicle.

When replacing your broken windshield or door glass, don’t sacrifice performance or comfort! Maintain the ride you’ve come to expect with SoundScreen acoustic glass… it’s quietly exceeding expectations!

2021s had a recall for the windshields. They weren't sealed right (I believe) and could pop out during an accident.
See if you're affected by that recall and let Ford handle everything (unless you've already had that completed...)

If you have rain sensing wipers, that's the camera.

My 2019 was delivered with the windshield broken in transit. Ford replaced it and I have been completely satisfied.
I do remember looking into it at the time and a Ford OEM windshield was required for various reasons.
As for Safelite. I have an Accord and the rear side window was broken by a landscaper stump grinding.
I called Safelite, and everything was automated. Designed so you needed to set up an appointment online. Or pay in advance without an opportunity to ask questions over the phone.
So they expected me to pay without even knowing if it was a Honda windshield or a cheap repop.
I repaired it through my local mechanic for about the same money with a factory window. I had to clean up all the glass myself, but Im happy.
Unless you hate your Ford dealer I would let them do it.
Im finding more and more that companies are going full automation with the phone systems. If I didnt need to speak to a representative I wouldnt be calling at all.

I just had my broken windshield replaced. A few months ago I contacted the dealership to check to see if it is on recall for OEM windshield replacement (especially since it was cracked). It definitely fit in the date requirements but they said I was not part of the recall

Subsequently the window was further damaged by rocks. I had the window replaced with the "requested" OEM version at the insurance company`s authorized location. When I went to have it calibrated at the dealership they had issues and had to reinstall the software twice. The dealership was concerned after the first reload that the window was not a Ford window and checked to see if it had the Ford logo on the bottom center of the window. It did and they subsequently reloaded the software again. This time it did recalibrate properly.

I got the impression that IF it was NOT an OEM windshield, they would not continue with the recalibration (covered by insurance) and take responsibility that software would load properly. I suggest with these new trucks you make sure you request and get OEM windshields. I know its an added cost.

Just did it. Expensive. Absolutely what this post says.

Gordon doesn't replace windshields. They outsource it and calibrate the camera. They know the shops that do a good job they don't want return service either.

I dropped it off with Ford for warranty work. I settled with the glass company and ford separately for the calibration.

I had Safelite install a new windshield on my truck. My recommendation is to avoid Safelite. At the time, if I didn't get the recalibration, I was required to sign a form releasing them of liability. What a crock. Not knowing any better, I had them do the calibration. All they did was enable a calibration relearn and drive the truck around the block a few times. The calibration felt off to me, like it was biased to the left more than the right. I took it to the dealership, where they did the calibration in the drop-off bay. They did not have to drive the truck. They charged me only $50, but maybe I got lucky there. The calibration wasn't much different though.

If your installer doesn't plug anything into your truck's OBDII port (to erase the calibration) and the new windshield goes back on just like the old one, no calibration is necessary.

Why not just take it to the dealer and have the glass company come there to replace the windshield and get it recalibrated all at the same time???

I had a fun time trying to get Safelite to replace my 250’s windshield.

1st attempt the technician called me 5 minutes before they were supposed to be at the house and said they can’t find my windshield at the shop.

2nd attempt they came out and looked at my truck for 5 minutes and said they got the wrong one and it won’t work on the truck.

Gave up on them at that point and found a local company with a decent reputation to come out. They got it done the day of the appointment without any issues and I was happy. The technician from this local company left my windshield and dash a little messy…I’d think good practice would be to clean up after the install etc. but I was just happy to have it done at that point and they were easier to deal with than safelite.

My wife found an independent guy (mobile) that fixed a chip in her windshield. He mentioned that he also installs windshields, so that's who I'll go with next time.
