I sandblasted every piece of sheet metal on my truck with fine grit from Tractor Supply. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...s?cm_vc=-10005
Looks like the price has gone up quite a bit but I also got a small discount for buying a full pallet. Not a pleasant job and you need a large air compressor but great results.
I take it that it's a steel grill since it's painted. My 63 Unibody steel grill I had sandblasted and primed and it came out fine. Must have had five different colors of paint on it and I wasn't about to deal with that. There was an option to sandblast and Powdercoat but I'm too cheap.
If you find yourself South in Oregon... I have used MetalWorks in Eugene http://metaldipping.com ... Also, what year grille? I assume it is steel? I used various wire wheels to clean the rust off the back of my 62 grille. I did not want to use any harsh chemicals because the chrome on the front was still decent. Not sure I would want to attempt the same on a 63 or 64 grille though!
Blasting is the way to go.
I’ve had hoods, doors, fenders, grilles, core supports blasted with no issues.
My 63 Unibody is stripped and will be blasted next month.
I've had pretty decent luck by wrapping panels with lacquer thinner soaked towels and wrapping with plastic so it doesn't evaporate. It depends on what paint is on it though.

You're right! Providing it's lacquer based paint from the 1960's back or it will also work with non-acrylic enamel which was used for a limited time in the 60's, then just about everyone (except for Porsche) went to acrylic enamel. IIRR, Porsche finally dropped the lacquer paint in the 80's.
