Ive seen higher temps than other report seeing on their trucks and I believe a vast majority here are using a stand along gauge setup. Im reading mine through the OBD port it’s Forscan. Most of the the time the temps might be higher than others, like 165-170 empty but today driving home empty from work I got to 184. I know that’s not a killer, hopefully, since I’ve had mine rebuilt but curious why it may be as high as it is or if other users have similar temps using the OBD port.
Is there something else I should check or change possibly? It’s a 7 year old BTS with a 30 row cooler routed through the lower section in the radiator and the cooler like it came stock. Not a fan of seeing 170 or more, especially empty, when it seems like most everyone else says they are hard pressed to see 160.
According to Mark K 170-180F is ideal. Too cold is not good, mine wasn't getting warm enough in the winter after I installed the 6.0 cooler so I installed a Derale t-stat, now it runs 190 all the time and gets up near 200 on hills but according to Mark I'm fine. You have to get it warm enough to keep the moisture burned off.
You can run up to 220°F all day long with no issues. You can go up to 250°F for up to a half hour at a time.
If it gets up that high unloaded, something is wrong. It could be a bad bypass valve, or a restricted cooler circuit, or debris blocking the airflow to the cooler and/or radiator.
mine used to always go over 220 when towing my dump trailer, one day trans went to almost 240 and engine started to overheat. My problem was fan clutch. Idk if this helps u
