Maxium Trans Temp

Can any one tell me what the maxium safe operating temp is on the automatin trans in a 2002 power stroke 7.3. I put in a gauge before the cooler (not in the pan).
Thanks.

You'll get different opinions on this. I have never seen a manufacturer's specification. I think it's pretty much "the cooler, the better". It also depends on how often you want to change the fluid, what kind of transmission life you expect, and whether you are willing to pay for synthetic fluid.

My opinion: 245 degrees F. Probably conservative, but if you find you're running hotter very often, I would want to add some cooling.

The location you've selected does give you an indeterminant safety factor, since the output from your cooler would obviously be somewhat lower. Your gauge will tend to show the highest temp which the fluid sees, depending on how good the mixing is. You can then judge how much its been "fried", and when it might need changing.
