Hi guys,
I'm having a problem with some vibrations in my Excursion... When throttle is pressed it goes away and when it is fully released it goes away.. But at a neutral point it vibrates and shutters... I got underneath and checked the U joint and drive shaft and I think it's in the shaft at this coupler looking thing because that is the only point I seen slop/movement while my daughter put it in and out of gear... I'm going to attach a picture.. please help.
Excursions have a STUPID double cardan joint (referred to as a "constant velocity" joint) at the transfer case end. The centering ball in them is prone to developing tight spots in its travel. When this happens, it vibrates under a "float" condition. It could also be a seized set of needle bearings in a u-joint....driveshaft vibrations don't have to be (and commonly aren't) loose parts.
Oh, and to check it, remove the (also STUPID) 12-point, 12mm bolts that hold the driveshaft flange to the transfer case.
CHOCK THE WHEELS FIRST!!
Move the joint within its range of movement and feel for any binding or looseness. Move the driveshaft side to side and up and down while it's hooked to the rear pinion yoke and see if it's got tight spots too.
