I've started to notice a vibration in my drive train. I notice it a little at 45-50 mph, but when I shift into 5th gear I notice it more. No matter how fast or slow I drive in 5th, I notice it. If I push in the clutch, the vibration stops.
I don't know if it's the trans, U-joint or an unbalanced drive shaft?
Last July I was under the truck and noticed the weight block was missing from the drive shaft (fresh metal area). I don't know if this is related or not.
I don't know if now I'm just noticing it?
Maybe I could take the drive shaft out and have it checked for balance?
Yeah, I'd check that drive shaft, but by the symptoms you report, the vibration you're feeling isn't that. A drive shaft or u-joint will cause vibration at particular speeds regardless of what gear you're in, engine speed, or whether or not the clutch is dis-engaged.
Try getting it to vibrate, then push the clutch in while holding engine RPM the same as with the clutch out.
I just tried this: Try getting it to vibrate, then push the clutch in while holding engine RPM the same as with the clutch out. It stopped as soon as I pushed in the clutch. I tried to keep the RPM's about the same. I even when I revved the engine, the vibration didn't come back.
It seemed to taper off when I got the truck up around 65 mph.
Thanks for the direction!!
I was just fearing the worst (trans)
The problem is the yoke. The hole is slightly bigger than the U joint. So now I need to either replace the drive shaft (long part) or get one from a junk yard. Does anyone know if other Ford trucks would have the same drive shaft?
There’s a 93 Ford 4x4 F-150 with a an automatic at the local yard with a drive shaft. Does anyone know if this would work for my truck? I’m thinking of getting it and swapping the short end if I have to.
