oil filter adaptor

I have a 73 F-100 with a 240. I'm having a problem with the oil completely draining out of the filter if it sits more than 2 days causing 3 hard clunks - the mains I'm certain - on start-up before oil pressure builds. Once oil pressure builds it stays around 55 psi and dropping to about 25 psi once the engine gets thoroughly warmed up. What could be causing the oil to drain out of the filter? I have used 3 different filters and have still had the problem so I can rule out a faulty anti-drain back valve. Also is there an adaptor to change the oil filter from a horizontal mount to a vertical mount?

I don't think it's the filter.Maybe a weak oil pump. You could try thicker oil.

How many miles? My Dads 240 rattled pretty good on start up. I replaced the bearings and all was good. The 90 adapters came on the 60s early 70's vans with 240's. I think Ford Motorsport offered them later on.

The odometer shows 37,000. The sound is three disturbing clunks that sounds to me like the mains aren't oiled. With the filter completely draining after 2 days of sitting I was wondering if the filter is draining because the mains are bad and allowing the oil to seep past. Is that a thing that can happen?
Unfortunately I don't have a space that I can pull the engine and replace the bearings.

It wouldn't matter, all the oil from the engine, will be in the pan, all the bearings, mains, rods, cam, will be the same as dry, on start up, the oil pump must pick up the oil, push it through filter and passage ways to the bearings. While that is going on the bearings will knock being they are worn past factory clearence specs.

In answer to your one question, yes, Ford did make an adapter that positions the oil filter vertically. It was used on Econoline vans with the 240/300 inch 6 cyl.
Part number C5TZ-6881-A
But, like others have said, I don't think that will solve your knocking.

If I have a vertical filter that is full of oil on start up - versus a horizontal filter that is empty on start up - how would that vertical filter full of oil not help with oiling on start up?

I am recalling a fellow had an old Chevrolet PU. He rigged a toggle switch to kill coil power until he saw oil pressure on the gauge, then he would flip the tgoggle to start it while the engine was being spun by the starter. He also run "bulk oil" out of quart glass jars with metal screw on spouts that we sold out of a big tank .... "OK Kayo" was our motto. Was mid '70s. Don't know why he did it, but it would build oil pressure before combustion commenced. It was a early '50s, maybe even a late '40s PU with a 5 speed and 283 and rear out of a old school bus. He radiused the rear fenders for the bus's tires. School bus body brush painted brown on cinder blocks was his storage building behind his shop.

I know, TMI ... I got carried away.

Ford Motorsports does (or at least used to) make an adapter to change from horizontal to vertical oil filter mounting. I used one on my truck because it had an engine swapped out of a car or 2WD truck so it had the horizontal filter instead of the 4x4 adapter with a vertical filter. The filter interfered with the power steering gear mounting bolts when I converted to the integral steering gear from a later year and I couldn't find the correct adapter at the time. Mine is a FE 360, so may or may not be the same filter mounting size as the 240. Fair warning- the Ford Motorsports logo on it means it is a ridiculous price, like $90 plus if I remember right and that was over 5 years ago.

I understand what you mean and there are no extra filter gaskets.
