It's been some time since I pulled an engine out of a Bonus Built truck. I want to pull the engine out of my F-2. It seems I should be able to unbolt the transmission from the engine and separate them. The problem I have is I want to pull the engine ASAP so I can pull out the crankshaft and take it to the machine shop to get it checked and hopefully ground. In other times I've pulled motors I had the front clip completely off so it wasn't a problem to yank the engine and tranny as one unit. I will eventually remove the clip to install the rebuilt engine. To pull the front right now I'd have to cut a lot of wires. When I rewired the wires forward of the firewall last years, after a minor electrical fire I soldered the connections instead of using slip together connectors, never thought I'd have to pull the front clip off again. Now I plan to cut wires but just don't want to take the time to do that and unbolt the clip if I can pull the engine out by itself.
I've pulled my V8 by itself several times () with the clip on. Pull the hood, the radiator. The biggest issue is a hoist that can lift the engine clear of the fenders, and that will be even more of a chore pulling a 6. I had to use a lifting plate to be able to get the engine high enough with my hoist, I would guess with a 6 you'd also want a leveler. You may want to take off the front wheels and block under the axle to lower the front of the truck. With your forklift it might be less of an issue, but having something that heavy that high in the air is serious business.
You'll need to support the trans, I've always done that with a piece of tube steel across the top of the trans with a strap around the trans. I had the seat out and trans cover out, obviously.
It can be done. Like Ross said, it does have to go up a ways. Back before I knew anything, that's how I did it on my first truck. I was 15 and that's my Dad's head poking in the hole. Held the trans up with a chain. Rented a large tow behind cherry picker from the local rental store to make it happen.
I was thinking about it as I going to bed last night. I just couldn't remember where I had unbolt to separate the engine and transmission. I hate when you try to remove something and something is catching. I should be able to be able to separate them by unbolting the hogshead from the flywheel housing. I've done it before but last night l sore and tired and just couldn't remember.
I will eventually pull the tranny to clean it up, it's an oily mess because of oil leak from the engine. Good time to do it now. I just want pull the engine now so I can get the crank out
Yeah Ross, lifting won't be a problem, forklift and plenty of chain. Taking the hood off was going to be the next job.
Just remember to take the brake return spring off before you start pulling. I ruined a perfect stock spring that way. When I realized what was holding things up the spring was twice as long as normal....

one of the first thins I did when I crawled under the truck last night
and don't forget the ground wire... that thing will lift the whole truck without breaking
john
I've had that off since almost day one. The ground bolts to back head bolt on the flat six, at least on mine it did.

Me and my buddy Forkie Lift lift all kinds of loads. I lift control panels into and onto trucks, many times in fairly hairy situations but there's no other way. I tend to work alone must of the time and the lift truck is my main employee, helps lifts, acts as a table and a tow truck to move my projects around. I've yanked a lot of engine out of bare chassis's.
You could actually pull the engine and tranny together if you have a load leveler on your engine hoist. The only thing you'll need is a 2nd person to lift / support the transmission tail prior to clearing the front clip.
Good deal. Was going to add I pulled the V8 out of my MH F3, after unbolting hogshead, and removing radiator. I made a lifting plate to replace the manifold. Engine hoist made a go of it, even with the increased 4wd height.

Can I just acknowledge how much "awesome" is in this picture?
