Sounds electrical connection problem If pulling connector helps..
Clean connector and secure it with ziptie..?

Have you read codes from it?
If OD light is blinking, you have codes in it.
Generic scanners won't work.
ForScan APP and BAFX or OBDlink dongle, for example.

Slow engaging and disengaging, oil pressure issues..??
Just guessi'n,i'm no transmission guy..

I’ve been waiting on Mark to give you good advice, but while we wait…

Are you sure the shift linkage is adjusted correctly? (Probably yes since it works manually when removing connector)
Is the Neutral Safety Switch adjusted correctly?

I think something is wrong inside the reverse clutch.

When you unplug the connector the pressure control solenoid goes to maximum pressure. All that additional pressure is why the problem doesn't happen with the connector removed. It isn't an electrical problem.

I was thinking over torqued feed bolts. If the case is distorted, fluid could be bypassing under the gasket. Doesn't it engage 3rd to get into reverse?

It does not engage 3rd to get reverse. It does engage the direct clutch, which is also used in third gear. Maybe that's what you're trying to say.
