MAP sensor no signal

My truck has been running rough. It idles rough when I’m driving it surges when going a steady speed, it shuts off while I’m driving bad gas mileage. I’ve replaced the MAP sensor and the connector still no signal. I replaced the sensor one before about a month ago and it showed a signal on my diagnostic machine but then went back to 0. Replaced the sensor again after that and the connector no signal. What are some other possible causes?

Welcome

Couple questions for you and thoughts..

Did you use OEM from a known source, not Fleebay or Cramazon, and just about any online place? Suspect anything from the local store unless you went to the Ford or International counter guy. Very few online places we trust for our engines as there are way too many counterfeits out there, they just do not work.
If you did not use FORScan or FORScan Lite get it and the OBD II reader they recommend, just about any other will not do the job.
Have you checked the MAP, BARO, EBPV, and Boost with engine off? If they do not match within about .2 replace the odd ball out.
Check every connector for the engine even the batteries and grounds, you may need to pull back the wire looms several inches to verify good wires.
Pull your 42 pin connector off the driver side and look at the bottom of the harness for any damage, common problem area.
When you get FORScan and pull all codes, record them then clear everything, pull all codes again and let us know what you get.
After you pull all codes run all the self checks on FORScan and again record and share the codes.

I have an Autel diagnostic machine and a power probe for locating shorts and checking grounded wires. I bought my parts through NAPA. the connector and the sensor. I will try everything you said and post results. I picked this truck up from an impound yard for $2500 but the cops ripped out the roof liner and the panel that was connected ripped the dash apart no vents or ducts for heater and a/c, slashed all the seats and center console. But a 7.3L turbo diesel with only 250,000 miles I couldn’t pass it up. Just trying to get it back to where it should be. Thanks for the help I will post the results tomorrow

I agree that non OEM sensors can be just as problematic as the parts they are replacing, but from the background you gave I would probably be checking continuity between the MAP connector and the PCM connector. Rule out the simple and free especially after the cops went all "crazy ex-girlfriend" on the poor thing. With all the toys they got to play with in this modern age they still don't have a better method of searching than hack and slash?

Hey there @Skweez , welcome to the FTE!

I agree with the fellas above, the non-OEM sensors are nothing but trouble... I searched NAPA for their version of the MAP sensor and this is the only one I found.

I would highly recommend returning that sensor and purchasing one from your local dealer at a big markup or, go to a reputable online shop like Riffraff diesel or Diesel-O-Rings.

Riffraff link: https://www.riffraffdiesel.com/map-sensor-99-03/

Diesel-O-Rings link: https://www.dieselorings.com/14-067-...ap-sensor.html

In addition, I checked the wiring diagram and pinout for the 2002 7.3L MAP sensor (could not find the 2000 MY for some reason) and came up with the following diagram.

Please perform a visual inspection of the wires you connected and ensure they go to the right location on the connector.

Another thing... I have attached the MAP sensor pinpoint test from the PC/ED volume of the Ford Service Manual. Although, I would suggest a new sensor and a visual inspection of the connector wires before venturing into the pinpoint test.

Lastly, stick with us and keep talking to us. We are very much for you finding and resolving the issue via the most cost effective method than we are for throwing parts at it. We will get you there, just keep with us.

Again, nice to have you around!

I’ve tried multiple times to post the results from my scans and they won’t upload. The first one starts to and gets to 50% then just stops. I got a P1280 code ICP circuit out of range low, and when I do a live reading it’s says manifold absolute pressure sensor (Hz) is 0.

Perhaps the file size is over the 5MB limit?

Is the MAP sensor aftermarket?

Did you check the wire color code ensuring they were spliced properly?

The 99-up MAP sensors DO NOT USE FREQUENCY (Hz). Your PCM is looking for a voltage input. Only the MAP sensors used by Ford up to 1998 on all engines used a frequency output.
