I am not 100 percent sure how it works, but I just replaced mine two days ago. There is a ring bolted up to the ring gear. That ring has highs and lows. The sensor must have a magnetic sensor that picks up the pulse of highs and lows. The magnetic sensor acts as a switch that lets an electrical signal pass (a pulsating signal). There should be one "hot" wire and one "neutral/ground" that the pulsating signal passes though.
