Is it possible to “clone” a pcm using the FJDS? I tried using the vin and part number to do an initial program on a blank dpc202 as a spare for a 1996 f350 7.3 w/e4od and it always timed out after two bars at the download screen. It connected to the Ford server, I verified. The original pcm is still in the truck and works. The as-built data file on the Ford site has several errors so I’m curious if that isn’t causing the problem, though other possibilities exist for sure. I was using the vxdiag programmer but checked it could read data from the old pcm in FJDS and when it tried to program the FEPS pin was 18.2v. If this is possible do you have a procedure? Documentation on that fjds program is scarce. Thanks!!
Just to close the loop on this I ended up sending this blank Cardone 788365F PCM to Diesel Technology of Chattanooga for them to do a PCM flash to stock (TDE1) 7.3 PCM Flash: Stock - Diesel Technology Chattanooga (dieseltechchatt.com) . $60 and about $16 overnight prepaid shipping both ways. It was an unbelievably fast turnaround with the programmed PCM back in my hands two afternoons later. I would use them again without reservation. Jonathan there told me that they use the KESS by Alientech to program it on the bench and did several tests including injector buzz, which it passed. I put it in my truck and started it up (when it was blank there was only the check engine light and wouldn't start, of course). Next I used Forscan to check the module info on the bench using an OBD breakout box, EEC V breakout box and 12V power supply. Read it no problem, though there were a boatload of codes, as you might expect. Used the EEC V pinout from here Custom ECM - Bench Harness Pinouts . I did hear from Keith Perkins at L1training.com and he confirmed that "cloning" or copying my original PCM to the new blank PCM was not a function of factory tools like FJDS or IDS but rather tools like KESS. The Alientech site only lists 7.3 programming capabilities going back to 1999 but clearly it will do my DPC202 for the 1995-1997 as well. Overall this didn't break the bank and now I have a spare, VIN programmed PCM just in case. I can't say whether the seemingly corrupt as-built data or the VXDIAG programmer was the problem during my programming attempt. Hope this helps someone else.
Toreador_Diesel did kindly offer to program my PCM for me but had to have my truck there to do it and I don't know when I'll have my truck there in Houston again. Not really sure how he was going to program it but from what I gather, it would involve using the KESS... Thanks!!
