Hello, I have a 68 f100 long bed with a stock 351w 2v and the old original t18 trans with the granny first gear and Dana 60 3 power lock rear end. I want to keep a new tranny manual shift so my question is what is the easiest most direct fit? I will pull the 351 and rebuild with small upgrades so this gives me time to purchase a trans before this project starts. Thanks
The question is: do you want your truck to be a cruiser with a car type trans, or do you want a truck type trans? There are car trans like the T-5 5 speed and the TKO 5/6 speeds from companies like Modern Drivelines or Silver Sport Transmissions. For truck type trans, there is the stock Ford types like the SBF pattern M5OD and the ZF-5 5 speeds (these require a change to a hydraulic actuated clutch). There is also the NVG 4500 5 speed, and the Tremec 3350? 5 speed.
After a lot of research and long consideration about changing gears to improve drivability, I ultimately went with a TKX setup from Modern Drivelines and am hoping to install in late august or early September.
Based on my preference and goals, a new 5 speed was the best fit over trying to retrofit something from another truck like the zf or b/c platforms. A new transmission with 3 year warranty that will be easy to maintain and pretty easy install was right up my alley.
This is my first time, trying to reply, after several failed attemps, its easier to swap a transmission than to log in and reply,i have a 68 F250 camper special and a 70f2504x4 the 68 has a c6 and the 4x4 has a four speed from what ive gathered there are not a lot of options,i want a modern tranny and transfer case if i have to swap engines to get it i havent a clue what the easiest or if its possible for idiot mechanic like myself to do,although i have succesfully put new eaton truetrac in front axle and added power steering, and brakeshoes and air conditioning all in only four years, the brake shoes were the worst, had problems with the adjustment screws ,someone had them reversed, and took a month to figure out what i had done wrong, went thru a lot of fluid thinking it was air after replaceing all lines and wheel cylinders and even mastercylinder, but it stopes good now thank god because i forgot to tighten steering shaft and it cam off at country rd speed barely missed a group of guinea any one know what motors will fit in the 70,i have a job but not a lot of money and the local junkyard hasn't seen a bumpside in a long time
Scott, as a newbie, it is best for you to make your own thread, rather than hijack another thread. Your request gets lost so to say. Now, your 68 2wd has a 360 with the C-6. What engine does the 4wd have? With time and $$$$, you can put in anything that you want. Want an auto or manual trans? An FE is technically a dinosaur as there isn't too many upgrade options and they cost $$$$.

I'm interested in how your TKX install goes. I am about to replace my 4spd toploader with a TKX. Did you o with the close or wide ration option?
