Rather than mess with a trans swap, might I recommend rebuilding the old trans. You usually get a better and less expensive result. With a trans swap, you have no idea what the condition of the donor trans is. Even if it is lower mileage, about 1 time out of 3 it is actually in worse shape than your old one.
For not more than a couple hundred in parts, if you do the work yourself, you can rebuild your whole transmission and make it like new. For not much more than that you can upgrade it and make it tougher than it originally was. Just a shift kit makes a world of difference.

Are we talking about a manual or automatic transmission? 2wd or 4wd? Doesn't affect the original interchange question (3.0 and 4.0 bellhousing patterns are not compatible) but would kinda affect the rebuild process.
