Looking to flush and refill the coolant on my 2001 Ford Excursion V10. I am not having cooling issues but time to service as another vehicle we own recently overheated and I want to be proactive. The coolant reservoir, degas bottle, overflow (whatever you want to call it) will be replaced at the same time as its old and after 20+ years needs to be changed out. Debating changing the thermostat at the same time (would make a flush easier too).
I have been searching for a couple days on which coolant is appropriate. From what I can find the coolant type was changed in 2002 and only 2000 and 2001 used "green" coolant. Searching has shown I need coolant matching Ford specification of ESE-M97B44-A, or Ford VC-4-A. I am not seeing the spec show up on aftermarket coolant but I could be bad at searching.
The current coolant is green and I don't believe it has been changed to another type after a flush. What would the group recommend in regards to coolant type??
My '01 V10 was running orange when I got it, so it was "straightforward" to simply flush and go to the newest Yellow type of coolant. From my research it seems like the best option was to flush the system regardless, then refill using Yellow... The amount of coolants Ford has rolled out doesn't make it extremely clear. Yellow is the latest and greatest and is easy to find. I drained, flushed with a hose, then went through a lot of distilled water bottles : )
Appreciate the reply, still wondering what the spec is for the factory "green" coolant. At this point I'm going to assume that any standard auto parts store green coolant is acceptable until I can do a flush to a different type. Any other advice from the experts out there?
