Transmission Fluid type?

Rehabbing a 91 E350 7.5l. I just replaced the radiator, and am looking to top off some transmission fluid lost in that process.

I have the factory specs from ALLDATADIY, and that says type F. However when I search with the vehicle specs all the auto parts stores are showing Mercon V and the like.

Ive read that these two really aren't compatible, and I've also read that Ford stopped using Type F in the early 80s.

So with all this conflicting info I'm not sure what to do next, any ideas? Thanks!

That is an E4OD transmission. It requires MERCON V. Type F hasn't been used since the mid 1970's.

Ok! So an error in the data sheets provided online, good to know that can happen I'll be double checking stuff more often.

I have some Mercon from another project, do I need V or will this work?

That isn't MERCON. It's DEX/MERC.

Does it meet the now obsolete MERCON specification? I don't know, it won't say that anywhere on the bottle. If you trust that Valvoline is producing a fluid that meets the spec, then it's fine. If they are putting profits ahead of their customers, then it isn't fine. I don't know what to tell you.

I appreciate that point, gamble at my own risk, duly noted.

Separate but related question;

I haven't found a drain plug anywhere, assuming draining and replacing fluid means taking off the pan?

Could I instead disconnect the feed hose to the transmission oil cooler and add new fluid as the pump drains the system?

Mark, thank you for taking the time to write all that out for everyone to use, super awesome!

I've replaced the missing fluid, and am planning to replace the transmission filter and gasket this winter while this thing is in storage. I will bookmark this instructional for then.

Id like to add an aftermarket transmission temp sensor/gauge, any recommendations?

I thought Mercon V was the same as Dexron now? Maxlife should be okay for them too?

MERCON V is not the same as DEXRON, but some fluids are approved for both fluids.

According to Valvoline's website (https://www.valvoline.com/en-th/maxlife-atf/) is approved for MERCON V and DEXRON.
