Prolly a stupid question I know I need a cast iron gear for my cam. I ordered a new distributor from rock auto was told it is cast steel and would work. I thought steel was for roller and cast iron for non roller. Will it work or not do not want to trash cam.

Too bad you got a confusing answer from RA. It's best to order for your specific vehicle or for the specific engine if it is not original. Or, if you know what you want, order for a vehicle that uses what you want. For instance, I swapped in a roller cam in my '86 302. I ordered for a '86 Mustang HO as I knew it would come with a steel gear.
I don't think you can find a SBF truck distributor with a steel gear until 1994. Might be off a year.
If you had posted the part# or application it would have been simple to advise you.
Sorry about that it’s for a 351w out of a1990 f150. I converted it to carb to to put in a 82 f150. The distributor I order was specific to a 82 f150 should be cast iron but the cast steel is what threw me for a loop. Thanks for the help

It should work if it is for a 351W. Tips: (1) Be sure to check the installed endplay. My new Cardone for a 302 had a different bushing between the housing and gear. I had to machine .022" off it to keep it from binding when installed. (2) holding the housing tight to the block you should be able to pull up on the rotor shaft.(wiggle up and down) Holding the rotor shaft tight onto the boss in the block, you should be able to pull up on housing. (Same wiggle) Ideally .017" each.
cast iron distributor gear for hydraulic flat tappet and steel distributor gear for hydraulic roller.
If you buy aftermarket there is also billet steel cams as well which you will have to be careful about. I am going to run a steel distributor gear on my Crane OE roller block, roller truck cam since its not a billet roller cam just a plain steel roller cam.
