Will Distributor gear work with roller cam?

I have a 1989 F250 with the 302. The engine was converted to a roller cam set up when rebuilt. My question is will the old distributor gear work with the new cam? Or do I need a softer gear? I heard somewhere that the old gear will cause wear with the new roller cam setup.

A Ford steel roller cam needs a steel, bronze, or brass gear. A Ford cast iron flat tappet cam needs a cast iron, bronze, or brass gear. There may be aftermarket iron roller cams out there, I don't know for sure.

Use of a cast iron gear with a steel cam, or a steel gear with a cast iron cam, will lead to accellerated wear of the distributor gear, camshaft, or both.

The 5.0 liter cars of this era all used steel roller cams and steel gears. The trucks used iron flat tappet cams and iron gears. The blocks were compatible with either setup. The steel distributor gear is actually somewhat more common at auto parts stores.
