When I was at the gas pump last week, I started to do some math. With 44 gallons at $4 plus per, that’s a lot of money.
Today, I received delivery of a Gates #31828 Locking Fuel Tank Cap for about $20 on Amazon. Amazon said it fits my 2000 Ex and they were right.
I wanted a name I could trust and it seams to be well made and the plastic part of the key reads “GAS.”
Anyway, thought I’d share.
Looks like they updated the key for it. That's good. Most of the time this type of thing uses the CH751.
That is the most common key on earth, works on gas caps, filing cabinets, various cases and lock boxes, those silly gun lock things... really just everywhere.
I opted for a locking fuel door so I could run a switch to an alarm. Still working on the alarm part.
I park mine right outside the front door of the house, and have a loaded but not chambered AR15 concealed very close to the same door, and a night vision security camera above the truck, that way if i see someone shimmying under it going for the CAT, or trying to siphon it, i can go out and greet them properly.
I too have a locking gas cap but its just to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Truth is going thru the filler cap is too much work and much more notable for thiefs. If they want your gas they will tap the tank. This is where a motion sensor under the vehicle come in play..
That and I have seen a video that shows how useless 99% of the locking caps are, wide mouth channel-locks around the cap, squeeze it hard, and turn, comes right off, locked or not, because the squeeze crushes the sides in and binds it up so it just spins off.
another trick was spin a drill bit into the cap half an inch offset from the center, then screw in a 1 inch sheet rock screw to bind both parts of the cap togeather, puff it comes off like its not even locked.
And both methods take all of 25 seconds, and can be done in relative silence.
Just drop a hand full of spent bass casings next to the truck, they will probably get the message....
