I have a 95 psd with 98000 and was getting a some blue smoke from the exhaust and also found a lot of black crud in the bottom of fuel bowl and decided it might be time to put orings in.
Was wondering how big a deal it is for the home mechanic? I have read you have to dain the cylinder head of oil before you install the new ones.??? Also, I have heard i need an injector puller or installer???. Any tips or advice would be helpfull .
Thanks
black stuff in fuel is sounds like algee.stick your finger in it and if its slimey its algee.this will plug fuel filters and cause low power.boicid makes a cemical you can put in the fuel tank to treat it.i would try this first.
If you have done a lot of your own mechanic work, internal engine work, then you can change the orings. I've done a lot of it and decided to do my '96 a couple years ago. At least get a Chilton's manual on the truck before you start.
You don't need a special puller if you are careful. I used a 1 1/2 inch wide, flat nail puller with a block of wood under it to pry against the edge of the head where the valve cover bolts to. Be careful and take your time as you work each injector out.
Yes you have to drain the oil and fuel rails out first but you will still get some leakage into the cylinders. This is the scariest part, you have to make sure you get everything out of the cylinder before you put the injectors back in. I used a vacuum pump and a small tube, you can use compressed air and blow it in and force everything out too.
This is a time consuming job but if you are up for it, you will save a $1000.00 of labor. Took me about 8 hours total.
If you are using 2 quarts or more of oil every 5k miles, the oil filter is black and that crud in the bottom is black, you might suspect the orings. If they have never been replaced, probably a good thing to do soon because they are likely to fail.
on draining the oil from heads, you can do 2 things. You can remove the plugs(either one) from the cylinder head and make a gigantic mess of oil on your garage or carport or when you remove the valve covers you will see 2 allen head plugs between the injectors (toward the valleyof the engine). Remove those 2 plugs on each head and let the oil drain completely. Remove each injector and replace o-rings. Before you start her up to avoid busting tips on injectors you can unplug the CPS and spin her over until you get good oil pressure. After that plug sensor in and start her up and drive away.
