I need to run an old engine briefly and the points are pretty old and corroded but I'd rather not replace them just so I can run the engine for 5 minutes and forget about it again.
What method/material do you guys use to spruce up an old set of points if you were in a pinch?
I was told in auto class that non-metallic files/boards (emery or nail files) embed tiny grit in point contacts, that subsequently become fused into "glass" in use. May not matter for a short test run.
Thanks for the feedback ya'll. I actually have one of those tiny metal files, didn't know it had a name. I'll try that, I just hope the points open enough to let it slide through.
Thanks again.
The points are spring loaded to the closed position so getting the file between the contacts should not be an issue. OTOH, if the points are welded together, they can be broken apart.

Luckily no they are moving, I just didn't take the time to check how far apart they go and funny enough I'm not familiar with points enough to remember; I've only worked with points one time before and that was 12 years ago when I set them up--never touched them again after that lol
