Hello. My sons and I are working on a 1976 Ford F150 ranger XLT. We have completely flushed all of the fluids including the transmission fluid and replacing the transmission filter. After flushing the transmission fluid, the truck will now not shift into drive, reverse, or any gear but neutral and park. We have no idea why it drove before but now it won’t drive. We are new to this but are enjoying learning as we go. Any recommendations?
Hi Mark. Thanks for responding. The Internet and the auto parts store told us we should put 6 quarts of fluid in. We put four in and stopped because it appeared to have been slightly too much. Our plan was to drive the vehicle around the block and then check the level again. The replacement filter looks essentially identical to the old filter.
Maybe we understand what you’re talking about. There was a tube that went from a nipple on the transmission to a pipe. That was damaged and leaking so we replaced it.
What is the drive train? 2wd or 4wd? C4 or C6 or FMX? Did you drain the convertor also. Did a valve and spring fall out when the filter came down? Just asking, the guys need a few bones to work with on diagnostics online.
Ok we figured it out. Despite showing too much fluid, sitting overnight must’ve allowed the fluid to drain all the way down. We’ve added more fluid and it’s working perfectly. Thanks to everybody for responding! Onto the next project.

You're checking it while it's running right? I was gonna say you need to run it so it fills all the passages, then recheck it. You should be checking it and topping it up every time you drive until it stabilizes.
