Homosexuality

Since the other thread (What category do I fall in?) was getting off the original subject. I thought I would start another thread. If anybody has any questions about it. Let me know. I gotta walk in a gay man's boots every day.

I have a couple.
As far as general homophobia goes, have you successfully changed the "hearts" of any of your straight friends that didn't always know your orientation?
Did you consider taking up an urban lifestyle as so may gay men from rural America do even when they might prefer not to?

Thanks man. I appreciate that. Its not easy and it takes bravery to admit this to others, even people who have never seen you and you have and probably will never meet, but I felt that the board could use the benefit of some first hand experience on the homosexuality subject since thats what was talked about most in the "What category do I fit in?" thread.

Like many "straights", the things I don't know about gays would fill a book. One reason I haven't asked more questions is that I always felt that it was none of my business. I do not think that choice is involved any more than being left handed and, despite stereotypes, have found that gays I have known and worked with are generally good people. I know some will thump their Bible re this, but since stoning for adultry and the ownership of slaves is no longer in vogue, homophobia should not be either.

I have never changed the "hearts" of anyone. I'm not really trying to do that. What I am trying to do is be myself and express my views about things. If it changes someone's mind about how gay people are then that's great. What I really want is what everybody wants and that is to be a good person. Being gay isnt the be all end all. Being a good person is, in my opinion. I have a friend Lennie (unfortunately he doesn't like Fords, has bad luck with them). Anyway, he and I had been friends for years and when I told him it didnt phase him one bit. He treats me the same and says as long as I am happy then thats all that matters. He met my partner and its only added to our friendship.

I will never leave the country. Its my home. I am no good in the city. There are too many people there living too close to you and too much traffic. I like my house on a nice big plot of land where I can take my 4x4 off the pavement and go fishing in the small lake at the edge of my property. I dont need acceptance from others like myself. I am living my own life here where I think I belong.

I know I don't need to say this to you Dono. But as I can't seem to shut up, I will:

The only tool for combating homophobia effectively is knowledge and reliable information.

I guess I'm saying that what Chiefman has already DONE here, has begun chopping my tree of homophobia down.

. . well, has trimmed off some of the low hanging branches, anyway

Boy, this seems like a pretty touchy subject to get into. Since we're all being honest here I'll say this... I'm not a pro-gay guy. I don't hate gay people and if fact I have 2 gay friends. They are the most intellectual and talented people I know. One can play the keyboard and sing like nobodies business and the other is a really cool person. While I don't support homosexuality, I'm not against the person who is a homosexual. I'm against the act, but not the person. I really couldn't give a great explanation for this because I don't know how people all of a sudden figure that they are gay. I don't think people are born gay, I think it's a decision they make, and I'll leave it at that.

I agree, Dono, that there are things are none of anyone else's business. There are some things that can be asked though. I a not saying that I will answer every questions about it. I am saying that there are some sociological problems that go with my "label" and the questions I've been answering have all been associated with that.

I also agree with true4.2. I do NOT support homosexuality. I don't wish it on anyone because its a hard scrappin life and you better be tough as nails to live it. You gotta be brave and be willing to beat the **** out of someone for giving you a hard time if that's what it takes to be respected. Also, true4.2, if you read what I said in a previous post. You dont all of a sudden figure you are gay, its a feeling inside of you. The decision is only made to accept. Believe me, I know. And I will say its better to accept yourself than to lie to yourself for years and years. It's just not worth all the added stress of lying to yourself and everyone else.

Now that I CAN respect. I hope you will be a happy man for the rest of you life. It takes guts to open up and let people know how it is...especially when it's about you.
