1990 2wd F150 5.0 AOD. Transmission clunks when coming off the gas almost every time. Has done this since I got the truck but now will do it while coasting or really light on the gas too. When coasting it feels like the torque converter lockup is kicking in and out a few times.
Ideas? rebuild?

This is physically impossible on the AOD. It doesn't have a lockup clutch, like you're thinking of. When it goes into Overdrive, it's locked. Instantly, it has a separate shaft in there that directly connects the input from the torque converter, and bypasses the turbine and stator. It has no capability of "locking and unlocking" unless it's downshifting into 3rd.
Does it still do this if you just put the Transmission in D? And I'd be looking to U-Joints, or even the pinion gear on the rear differential, before I started suspecting the transmission.
Did some driving around in third and it still seems to clunk coming off the gas sometimes. didn't happen coasting though.
Didn't know that about the ford lockups?!? Knowing that I think it's jumping into 3rd gear when coasting for some reason then. Any Idea why it would do that?
I'll look at the U-joints and pinion about the clunk. Anything else?
The other transmissions like the 4R100/E4OD (maybe the 4r70W? That one I don't know) have a more traditional lockup clutch setup. The AOD and AOD-E (I think, I could be wrong about the -E) are a "direct connect" in overdrive.
It's not impossible that it's something in the transmission, I would be lying to you, if I claimed to be some kind of transmission guru (basically, I don't know if the AOD has a coast clutch in it, or not), but start with the simple things before looking into the complicated things. Does it have a 2-piece rear driveline? if so, check the carrier bearing.
I think these are probably two different issues. The truck has always had the clunk coming off and on the gas. But the coasting issue is recent.
And yeah, it's a two-piece driveshaft. Also is it normal for it to act like it's in neutral after a sudden stop from top gear then?
