Because I need another project (not!) I’m looking at a 77 f250.
Needs an engine but has a C6 and NP205. Automatics are not for me. With fabrication experience I know anything is possible but…..how hard would the conversion be?
For example did auto trucks come with needed brackets for clutch pedal and associated linkage.? Will I need to cut the tunnel? Are the trans mounts in different places?
Will the intermediate shaft work?
In other words is it worth the effort of or just keep looking?
Thanks in advance to anybody that’s had experience with this kind of conversion.
All it takes is time and money the parts are out there. big question is why ? 4spd's on cars are fun but on a pickup they pretty much suck. I can shift a John Deere tractor faster than an NP435 will shift.
I have autos and 4spd 73-79 Fords and I wish they were all C6's.
Unless you can get it dirt cheap, I'd keep looking. Not a simple conversion but would be a little simpler if you had a donor truck handy. Seems like 4 speeds vs C6s must have been close to 50/50 production. At least thats what I found when looking during my search. So with a little patience you'll find what you want.
Back in the 80s 4 speeds were king and automatics were weaklings in my book especially in a heavier truck like a highboy and a 4spd was all I wanted to own.....until I got a 77 HB from my brother with a C6. It didn't take long to make a believer out of me as I was hauling and pulling ridiculously heavy loads. Never went back to a 4spd but I can understand the desire to have one.
