Hi All: I am looking for articles on coverting a 1979 F250, 2wd, longbed, 400ci from a Manual transmission to Automatic. I've read through a bunch of posts and it looks like the tranny would be a C6. Is that right? I was hoping to find a full write up on the conversion, but I couldn't find one. Anyone know of an article detailing the conversion process?
Its pretty much a parts swap. Out with the manual & in with the auto. Make sure you get the flexplate. The crossmember & driveshaft should be the only real problems.
I think the cross member will work. In some cases ya will have to move the cross member back and I remember the holes are already in the frame. You will prolly need the auto mount. And maybe the cross member as well. But it is very doable and should be a bolt up thing.
I used the clutch peddle for a trailer brake only on an F350 with a 5th wheel and a 4 care hauler. The brakes where 60/ 40 between trailer and truck. And I could use the clutch (now brake) to apply only the trailer. This came in handy on Icy mountain passes.
Dennis? On the steering column Why can't he Remove the wheel and turn ***. Take the shift arm off. The collar off as well as the shifting actuator and linkage. And replace the auto collar wit a blank one? They where still available from Ford the last time I got one. You and Bill will both have the part number. Mine always came unpainted and ya had to match them to your collumn color.
Thanks for the INFO guys. If I remember right its a floor shift. I was thinkin of getting some kind of floor shifter for the auto. I don't think the truck will be a daily driver. Just an occasional tow rig, or farm type truck. When I did a similar conversion on a GMC Jimmy (auto to manual) the floor unbolted above the trans. It was kind of a turtle shell. Are Ford trucks the same way?
Yes the ford has a floor board that unbolts. The swap is very simple. I have done it before. The cross member is the same just put it back one set of holes, the transmisson mounts are also the same. As for the neutral safety switch i just left it bypassed the way the factory did it in the dash.
