Help me identify, tranny, engine, axle...
I just purchased a 1975 F250. How can I tell what type of transmission I have, as well as identifying the engine. The seller told me it was a 460CID, but according to the VIN, it should be a 390CID. Also, how do I know if I have a C6 transmission, or something else.
Finally, how can I identify the axle ratio on the truck.
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Hey, go to the tech articles and lookup the tranny tech article. I think its also posted in the transmission forum. IT shows you how to ID a tranny.
For the axle ratio and type of axle. Look on the center rear end pumpkin. On one of those housing bolts there should be a metal tag. It will have a series of letters and numbers.
THat will get you started.

OK the easy way to tell which engine you have is by the number of value cover bolts .
Five value cover bolts is for engines 332,352,360,361,390,406,410,427 and 428.
Seven value cover bolts is for engines
429 and 460 but to tell if it is a 429 or 460 you need to drop the pan to look at the crank casting number. And the thermostat housing in both engines goes vertically into the intake.
casting numbers years engine
4u, 4ua 68-78 429
2y, 2ya, 2yab, 2yabc 68-78 460
3y 79- up 460
six value cover bolts is for engines
289,302, or 351
The windsor displaced either the 289, 302 or 351ci. The windsor has the thermostat housing that goes horizontally into the front of the intake manifold. The the 351 will have a 1/2 inch step down to the distributor from the intake where as the 289, 302 won't.
eight value cover bolts is for engines
351 cleveland /modifed 400
The 351 clevelands have a 2 or 4 number into the upper corner of the head to designate 2 or 4 barrel. On the cleveland and 400, the thermostat goes into the block. Hope this helps.
